About the Position

St. Anne's-Belfield, a PS-12 school serving 900+ students in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking an Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach for the winter athletic season. The position reports directly to the Director of Athletics and aligns with the philosophy that the basketball program complements the entire Saints athletic department. The winter season begins at the beginning of November and runs through the end of February / beginning of March. Primary practice times are Monday through Friday from 4 pm–6 pm, with additional practice times around competition dates. This is a stipended position paid across 7 pay periods, with a total stipend ranging from $3,000 to $3,500.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the Head coach in conducting and developing practice and game plans.
  • Analyze individual player abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, and integrate findings into season competitions and strategy sessions in partnership with our basketball staff.
  • Support team rules and regulations and ensure players are familiar with them.
  • Assist in organizing team‑building sessions and off‑court activities.
  • Instill good sportsmanship in all team players and in all phases of athletic participation.
  • Assist in managing and supervising athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, and respect.
  • Encourage players to engage in other Saints sports programs.
  • Use a variety of instructional techniques to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student‑athletes in basketball.
  • Take all necessary precautions to protect student‑athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Passion for basketball and comprehensive, in‑depth knowledge of the game.
  • Extensive knowledge of current coaching techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of VISAA & basketball rules that apply to the sport.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct, relate to, teach, and supervise student‑athletes on and off the court.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by the athletic schedule.
  • Basketball coaching experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with independent school or collegiate athletic environments preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of standing or walking.
