Job summary

Pocatello Fire Department is seeking a Part-time Transit Driver to operate department transit vehicles on a fixed route or by request, delivering safe and reliable transportation to eligible patrons.

You will hold a Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements, and possess a high school diploma or GED. Prior large-vehicle driving experience is preferred; the role includes documentation, safety checks, and customer service responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip checks of vehicles including fuel and fluid levels, tires, and potential problems or damage.
• Assist passengers on and off bus, including wheelchair lifts and securing wheelchairs.
• Answer questions and provide fare/route information, schedules, transfers, and maps; promote a positive passenger experience.
• Maintain route logs, reports, and documentation.
• Perform duties in accordance with City policies and safety practices.

The Part‑time Transit Driver operates Transit Department vehicles on a fixed route or schedule, or provides door‑to‑door transportation by request for eligible patrons. The job requires safe driving skills and exceptional customer service skills to ensure passengers are served in a timely, reliable, and safe manner. Part‑time Transit Drivers may be assigned additional and/or alternate duties in administration, dispatch, Medicaid dispatch, customer service, paratransit, ticketing, and freight operations. The job requires the ability to maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed officials, other City employees, other organizations, and the general public. The work environment is a Department vehicle and shop environment that may include exposure to weather conditions and traffic hazards. The noise level is generally moderate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operate Department vehicles, providing passengers with timely, reliable, and safe transportation.
• Collect fares and/or check passes or transportation vouchers.
• Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip checks of vehicles including fuel and fluid levels, tires, and potential mechanical problems or damage.
• Assist passengers on and off bus or vehicle as needed, including operating wheelchair lifts and securing wheelchairs.
• Answer questions and inquiries from passengers, provide fare and route information, schedules, transfers, and maps; promote a positive passenger experience and maintain order in the vehicle.
• Maintain route logs, reports, and documentation.
• Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements required.
• One (1) year of large vehicle driving experience is preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• Knowledge of methods, techniques, and objectives of the operation of vehicles to provide passengers with timely, reliable, and safe transportation.
• Knowledge of transit routes, schedules, fares, and related passenger information.
• Knowledge of ADA and other applicable regulations.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices.
• Knowledge of traffic and vehicle safety codes.
• Knowledge of using a personal computer and job‑related software applications.
• Ability to operate vehicles, conduct safety inspections, assist passengers, operate a computer, use a two‑way radio, read maps and schedules, maintain records, communicate effectively in English, complete assignments timely, and perform duties in accordance with City procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials, manipulate tools, keyboard, type, reach with hands and arms, and operate a motor vehicle or job‑related equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the required tasks is necessary.
