Grade Level/Terms of Employment: Grade 109.1 / 9.5 Month (184 days - 6 hours) Contract

Immediate Supervisor: Supervisor of Transportation
General Description:
The Van Driver is responsible for transporting pupils to and from school and special events. This individual shall have no limitations that will interfere with the ability to control and drive a van/car. Occasional operation of vehicles during inclement weather is required. No prior experience is required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections according to the Virginia Department of Education
- Maintains safety equipment’ reports unsafe vehicle conditions, and reports all operating and equipment deficiencies
- Adheres to the preventive maintenance schedule and makes vehicle available for periodic maintenance; washes van, cleans van inside and out, and fuels van as a vehicle requires
- Completes required forms and reports in an accurate and timely manner
- Adheres and complies with safety rules, motoring regulations, and laws
- Attends all scheduled staff meetings
- Loads and unloads vehicles according to established procedures
- Follows designated route schedule, and stops at authorized stops only
- Notifies proper authorities of vehicle breakdowns or deviations in schedule
- Transports only authorized students, and ensures all pupils are accounted for and all runs are covered
- Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for vehicle operations
- Conducts periodic emergency evacuation drills
- Transports students to special events and field trips
- Ensures passenger safety, maintains discipline in the vehicle, reports all accidents, and completes required reports
- Performs related tasks as required
Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s License with no negative points within 90 days of their start date; an out-of-state candidate shall be responsible for obtaining an up-to-date driving record from the current state of domicile and providing it to the Talent Acquisition Office.
- Be at least 18 years old
- Three years of experience in the operation of a motor vehicle and skilled in the operation of a vehicle
- Must meet requirements for drivers as stipulated in the Regulations Governing Pupil Transportation including Minimum Standards for School Buses in Virginia published by the Pupil Transportation Service of the Virginia Department of Education
- Must have skills in the safety operation of a vehicle; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children using patience and understanding
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, associates, and students
- General knowledge of the geography of the city and the location of streets
- Must be able to pass applicable physical examination including urine drug screening, TB skin test, and Virginia Criminal Record check.
- Submit to testing for alcohol that complies with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act.
