Job summary

Dorchester County is seeking a full-time Equipment Operator to operate heavy and specialized equipment in the maintenance and construction of county roads, water/sewer, and stormwater systems. The role involves independent work under general supervision, with duties including equipment inspection, routine maintenance, and supporting other Public Works operations.

Responsibilities include operating various trucks and machinery, manual loading/unloading, fiel dwork, and assisting pump station

Responsibilities

• Performs hydro excavation of sewer lines and related camera/inspection tasks as needed.
• Maintains pump stations, sewer lines and manholes and assists pump station crews.
• Follows all safety policies; may be on-call and respond to emergencies as required.
• Provides leadership to less-experienced operators when needed and attends trainings.

Job description

The purpose of this job is to operate heavy and/or specialized equipment in the maintenance and/or construction of County roads, water/sewer systems and stormwater systems and in support of other Public Works Operations; to maintain assigned equipment; and to perform other work as required.

This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Operates heavy equipment to excavate and compact earth, cut roadways and ditches, remove trees, grade land, build ponds, build roads, load/unload materials, move/haul materials, maintain County properties, install pipe and perform other general or specialized functions of the Public Works Department.
• May operate dump trucks, service trucks, and other trucks, motor graders, bull dozers, bob cats, front-end loaders, skid steers, bush hogs, back hoes, track hoes, rollers, packers, compactors, trailers, tractors, low boys, fork lifts, etc.
• May operate a vac-truck with hydraulic and water pump to clean sewer lines, cross lines and drain pipes, pump stations and lift stations.
• Removes debris from drainage pipes, box culverts and other storm drainage structures.
• Manually loads/unloads materials onto vehicles.
• Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.
• May perform cement/concrete work.
• Performs routine landscaping work at job sites as necessary.
• Uses welding and cutting torches as needed in equipment maintenance.
• Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe working conditions; reports defects or required maintenance to the supervisor.
• Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.
• Cleans pump stations, sewer lines and manholes.
• Assists pump station crews.
• Performs hydro excavation of sewer lines as needed.
• Works with camera crew; smoke tests man hole for leaks.
• Washes lines with pull behind washer.
• Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
• May be on 24-hour on-call status as assigned; may be required to work during emergency conditions as assigned.
• Provides leadership to less experience equipment operators as required.
• Attends training as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college.

Two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications, Certifications and Licenses:

• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
• Ability to obtain a CDL with Tanker endorsement as designed by department.

Work is performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to my co-workers or others.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position; typical work 40 hours per week Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the “core” work hours of 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and must work 40 hour each week to maintain full-time status. Must be available to work holidays, weekends, and during emergencies. May respond to after hour emergencies as assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing.
