About The Role

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented VA Mortgage Underwriter to join our Consumer Direct Lending team. You will underwrite VA mortgage loans per VA guidelines, internal credit policies, and investor requirements, ensuring a fast, accurate, and smooth underwriting process while maintaining high standards of compliance and service.

Responsibilities

1. Review and underwrite VA mortgage loan files (purchase and refinance) for compliance with VA, investor, and company guidelines
2. Analyze credit, income, asset, title, and appraisal documentation for completeness and accuracy
3. Render timely and accurate underwriting decisions and issue conditional loan approvals or denials
4. Communicate effectively with Loan Officers, Processors, and other stakeholders to gather additional documentation as needed
5. Stay current with changes in VA underwriting guidelines and proactively apply updates to your work
6. Help identify process improvements and assist in developing underwriting best practices
7. Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory and company requirements, including VA SAR responsibilities (if applicable)

Ideal Background

1. 10+ years of mortgage underwriting experience
2. 5+ years of VA experience
3. Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
4. Strong communicator with excellent writing skills
5. High integrity with strong ethical values
6. Team player with effective collaboration skills

Minimum Qualifications

1. 3+ years of recent VA mortgage underwriting experience
2. An active VA SAR credential is preferred
3. Deep knowledge of VA guidelines, AUS (DU/LP), and federal lending regulations
4. Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail
5. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume lending environment
6. Excellent communication and organizational skills
7. Experience in consumer-direct lending is a plus
8. Comfort working remotely and using modern loan origination and collaboration tools

Base pay range for NYC: $76,500—$103,500 USD. Compensation may vary by location.
