Job description

UX Designer – Infrastructure, Design Systems

We are seeking a UX Designer specializing in design systems to help maintain, strengthen, and evolve the foundation behind our digital products.
This is not a traditional UX role focused primarily on user research, journey mapping, or designing individual product experiences. It sits at the intersection of design systems, design engineering, and front-end development collaboration.
You will own the ongoing infrastructure of an established design system in Figma—including components, patterns, libraries, documentation, and governance. You will work closely with designers and developers to ensure the system remains consistent, scalable, accessible, and accurately implemented across products.
Although you will not be expected to write production code, you should understand how front-end components are built and feel comfortable discussing implementation requirements and technical tradeoffs with engineers.
The ideal candidate combines strong design judgment with systems thinking and enjoys bringing clarity, structure, and consistency to complex digital environments.

What You’ll Do

Maintain and Evolve the Design System

  • Manage and improve an established design system in Figma.
  • Refine, consolidate, and maintain reusable components, patterns, templates, and layout standards.
  • Identify unnecessary duplication, inconsistencies, and opportunities to simplify the system.
  • Design new components and patterns when product needs cannot be met by the existing system.
  • Ensure system assets remain scalable across products, platforms, and use cases.

Manage Figma System Infrastructure

  • Build and maintain sophisticated Figma components, variants, properties, variables, libraries, and design tokens.
  • Organize system assets so they are intuitive and efficient for other designers to use.
  • Maintain alignment between the Figma system and coded components.
  • Apply strong design judgment when making decisions about component structure, behavior, and flexibility.

Create Clear Documentation

  • Write practical, easy-to-follow documentation explaining how components and patterns should be assembled and used.
  • Document component anatomy, behavior, variants, accessibility requirements, responsive considerations, and usage guidelines.
  • Create documentation for new components, system updates, and releases.
  • Make the system easy for designers and engineers to understand and use without extensive one-on-one guidance.

Partner With Developers

  • Collaborate closely with front-end engineers throughout design, handoff, implementation, and quality assurance.
  • Communicate design intent and component behavior clearly enough to support accurate implementation.
  • Participate in technical conversations about feasibility, responsive behavior, accessibility, and implementation tradeoffs.
  • Review implemented components and help resolve differences between design specifications and production experiences.
  • Think with the structure and precision of a developer without being expected to write production code.

Support Governance and Releases

  • Help manage the processes used to introduce, review, release, update, and retire components.
  • Maintain consistency across the system as product needs evolve.
  • Contribute to governance standards and release documentation.
  • Help determine when teams should reuse, modify, or create components.
  • Regularly audit digital experiences to identify system drift and opportunities for consolidation.

Champion System Adoption

  • Help designers and engineers use the design system correctly and consistently.
  • Answer questions and provide guidance on component selection and implementation.
  • Promote shared standards while remaining responsive to legitimate product needs.
  • Build collaborative relationships across design, product, and engineering teams.

Design for Accessibility

  • Incorporate WCAG accessibility standards into components and patterns from the beginning.
  • Document requirements related to keyboard behavior, focus states, color contrast, responsive behavior, screen readers, and other accessible interactions.
  • Partner with designers and developers to ensure accessibility requirements are carried through implementation.

What We’re Looking For

  • Four or more years of experience in UX, product, or digital design, including at least one to two years of direct design-system experience.
  • Demonstrated experience building, maintaining, or significantly contributing to a design system in Figma.
  • Advanced proficiency with Figma components, variants, properties, variables, libraries, and design tokens.
  • Strong understanding of component architecture, reusable patterns, responsive design, and accessibility.
  • Experience refining and consolidating an existing system—not solely creating polished product screens.
  • Strong documentation skills, with the ability to explain complex component behavior clearly to both designers and developers.
  • Experience partnering directly with front-end engineers during handoff, implementation, and component review.
  • Working knowledge of front-end development concepts and an understanding of how design-system decisions translate into code.
  • Strong visual and interaction-design judgment.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • A portfolio containing detailed design-system case studies that clearly explain your role, decisions, process, and impact.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with design-token workflows or tools such as Style Dictionary.
  • Familiarity with Storybook or another component-driven development tool.
  • Experience working with Adobe Experience Manager.
  • Experience supporting a design system used by multiple product teams.
  • Experience working with consumer-facing digital products.
  • Experience establishing contribution, versioning, release, or component-deprecation practices.

What We’ll Look for in Your Portfolio Your portfolio will be an important part of our evaluation. We are especially interested in examples that demonstrate:

  • Design systems you have built, maintained, or evolved.
  • Your specific contribution to the work.
  • Component architecture and system organization in Figma.
  • The reasoning behind key design and system decisions.
  • Documentation created for designers and developers.
  • Collaboration with engineering teams.
  • Governance, release, or maintenance processes.
  • Accessibility and responsive-design considerations.
  • How your work improved consistency, scalability, adoption, or design-to-development handoff.

We are less interested in portfolios containing only polished screens or final product mockups. We want to understand how you think, how you organize complex systems, and how your work helps other designers and developers succeed.

What Success Looks Like

  • Designers and developers consistently use the design system instead of recreating components.
  • Figma libraries are organized, current, scalable, and aligned with coded components.
  • Documentation is clear enough for team members to use the system independently.
  • New components and updates follow a consistent review and release process.
  • Design-to-development handoff becomes more efficient and accurate.
  • System inconsistencies and unnecessary component duplication are reduced.
  • The design system continues to evolve alongside changing product needs.

The Person Who Will Thrive Here You are a grounded, collaborative designer who enjoys solving complicated problems and creating structure from ambiguity. You have strong design instincts, but you are equally energized by the technical details and infrastructure that make a design system successful. You communicate effectively with developers, welcome constructive feedback, and remain optimistic when navigating complexity or organizational change. You are motivated by doing excellent work, supporting your teammates, and steadily improving the system—not simply by creating the most visible design on the screen. This is an excellent opportunity for a capable mid-level designer who already understands design systems and wants to deepen that expertise while making a meaningful, long-term contribution to a growing product organization.
