Job description

General Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, locate the installation and maintenance of water mains, valves, services, meter boxes, vaults, loops, fire hydrants, etc., in the Distribution System with maximum efficiency and safety for the public. Serve as a lead role in relation to the Utility Worker I, focusing on efficient location and maintenance within the Distribution System.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Promote customer relations within the Distribution System; restore paving and concrete; install bracing, blocking, strap fittings, pipes, valves; cut and cap mains; operate heavy equipment such as pumps, hand tools, and air compressors; operate backhoes and trackhoes; flush mains and service lines after installation.
  • Operate all BWWB vehicles and heavy equipment as required; calculate requirements and requisition materials such as concrete, gravel, sand, and asphalt; responsible for landscaping; read valve and detail maps; shut off water as needed; maintain and replace fire hydrants; meet with Fire Department officials when necessary; serve on the on-call rotation for maintenance of the Distribution System.
  • May need to work on an on-call schedule outside of normal hours on a rotating basis; operate jackhammers daily; perform other duties as directed.
Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Certifications:
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Valid commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A required.
  • Grade I Water Certification preferred.
Experience:

Four years of construction experience required, including leak repairs. Basic computer skills are preferred; excellent customer service and communication skills are a plus.

  • Reaching with hands or arms in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity for manipulating objects, such as using a keyboard.
