Job description

UW-Madison Critical Care Anesthesiologist

Lead, Teach, and Innovate at the Birthplace of Academic Anesthesiology

The University of Wisconsin–Madison Department of Anesthesiology is seeking a Critical Care Anesthesiologist to join our nationally recognized team at the birthplace of academic anesthesiology in the United States. This is an exceptional opportunity to build a rewarding academic career in a collaborative, physician-centered environment that values clinical excellence, mentorship, innovation, education, and work-life balance - all in one of the nation's most desirable cities to live and work. Whether your passion is delivering outstanding critical care, teaching, research, scholarly pursuits including device development, developing educational programs, or administrative initiatives, you'll find the support and resources to thrive at UW-Madison.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care. Provide expert anesthetic care within a collaborative anesthesia care team model. In addition to typical operating room roles, anesthesia-intensivists practice in the Cardiothoracic ICU (anesthesia-led) as well as the Surgical and Medical ICUs. We provide expert quaternary critical care in a collaborative team model including residents, fellows and advanced practice practitioners. For anesthesia-intensivists, call responsibilities are largely ICU-based with OR call being taken on a purely-volunteer basis.

We target 10-12 weeks of ICU practice annually. At UW, we have a compelling post-call schedule – it varies based on track and FTE but is often a full week of post-call time after ICU service weeks!).

Scholarly Opportunities. We offer a compelling FTE-allotment for the pursuit of academic interests. CHS-track faculty are allotted ~0.2 FTE towards academic efforts (!). Meanwhile, faculty hired to the Clinical Track are allotted ~0.1 FTE towards educational, administrative and academic interests.

Our faculty participate in myriad multi-center research efforts and other academic projects. We were participants in the PCCRG Preoxi Trial (NEJM 2024), the SCCM Discovery IHCA Study (Crit Care Med 2024), and the SCCM Glycemic Control Guideline (CCM 2024). We are a site for the upcoming PCORI-funded VICTORY Trial and have ongoing involvement with the PCCRG group, as well as the MPOG. Our faculty are heavily involved in programmatic development and academic projects including medical device design and patenting! While we focus on late translational and bedside research efforts, our department has multiple internationally recognized, NIH-grant funded investigators.

Teaching & Mentorship of medical students, residents & fellows. Our faculty continue to grow our resident and fellowship education programs and are sought after teachers – both in the lecture room and at the bedside. UW offers a full spectrum of anesthesiology fellowship programs. Our critical care anesthesia fellowship has pathways available for anesthesiology, surgical and emergency medicine physicians.

Academic & Leadership Contributions. Advance the “Wisconsin Idea” – that education should influence and improve people’s lives beyond the classroom – by translating academic expertise and innovation into meaningful improvements in patient care and health throughout Wisconsin and beyond.

Position Highlights

  • Compelling compensation and benefits package with extremely desirable schedule
  • Full-time or part-time appointments are available (80–100% FTE)
  • Academic ranking of Assistant, Associate or Professor commensurate with experience:
  • Clinician Teacher (CT) Track
  • Clinical Health Science (CHS) Track
