Job description

UTS-Temporary Uplift PLUS Writing Instructor at UNC Chapel Hill

Uplift PLUS, established in 2014, aims to recruit high-achieving students to UNC -Chapel Hill by offering an immersive experience that fosters belonging and exposes students to campus life. Rising high school seniors are encouraged to apply.

Participants live on campus for two weeks, attend an essay writing course, engage in various learning activities, and explore campus resources. The Uplift PLUS Writing Instructor will deliver instruction for the writing course, supporting students through the college admissions process, especially in drafting, editing, and finalizing their essays.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead classes during the weeks of July 7-11 and 14-18, 2025, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am.
  • Conduct in-person classes, monitor attendance, and create lesson plans with materials like PowerPoint presentations and handouts.
  • Cover topics such as elements of storytelling, literary devices, strategies for personal narratives, and analyzing exemplar essays.
  • Provide constructive feedback on students' written work and communicate with students as needed.
  • Assist students in writing their college application essays, aiming for final drafts by the program's end.
Position Details

Time Limited: Yes, for 2 weeks from July 6-19, 2025.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 10:30 am.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience, from an accredited institution.
  • At least 1 year of experience teaching English, writing, college prep, or college admissions essays.
Required Skills
  • Ability to create a supportive, safe, and effective learning environment.
  • Experience with group facilitation and experiential learning.
  • Interest in providing educational access to high school seniors.
  • Knowledge of higher education learning theories.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergencies and comply with policies, including passing a background check and completing training by May 17, 2025.
Preferred Experience and Skills
  • 2-3 years of relevant teaching experience, especially in writing or college prep.
  • Strong critical thinking, communication, time management, and assessment skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a good understanding of university resources.
