Job Duties

  • Contacts managed care companies for pre-certification of services and validates authorization as necessary.
  • Contacts insurance companies for benefit information.
  • Processes prior authorizations to Medicaid.
  • Researches claims denied due to no authorization.
  • Confirm insurance information and census for billing purposes.
  • Initiate and follow-up on inpatient appeals process.
  • Assist in discharge procedures, including providing discharge information to insurance companies, scheduling of appointments and monitoring PCP follow-up.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid authorization requirements.
  • Attend multi-disciplinary team meetings to request additional authorization and participate in discharge planning.
  • Completes electronic medical record documentation as required.
  • Identify system problems that influence UM flow of operations and engages in the problem-solving process.
  • Particpates in the development and implementation of other projects as assigned by the Director of Acute Intensive Services.
  • Assist in filing of Emergency Detention Orders, Notice of Release and court documents to establish authorized lengths of stay.
  • Train staff on related UM procedures including, but not limited to, insurance, Medicaid, and PE eligibility.
  • Reviews and documents as needed the physical and mental condition of clients to request authorization from insurance companies.
  • Attends staffing with agency physicians to identify insurance or financial issues related to the inpatient stay.
  • Conducts record searches as requested by the treatment team or physician to obtain a history of medications and responses.
  • Interacts with physicians, managed care, and pharmacy to assist patients with obtaining medications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • General knowledge of office procedures and operations specifically related to insurance and utilization management for an adult inpatient facility.
  • Understand emergency detention statues.
  • Typing and basic computer usage.
  • Present information to insurance companies for prior authorization.
  • Interfacing and referring to internal and external contacts.
  • Interpersonal communication, problem-solving and organization.
  • Signs and symptoms of psychiatric disorders in adults.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associates Degree in related are preferred.
  • Office administration experience is preferred.
