FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Salary Range: $40,310 – $44,341 per year (paid as $19.38 per hour - $21.32 per hour)

Schedule: Monday to Sunday, any 8-hour shift between 5:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Occasional evenings and holiday hours may be required.

Job Summary

The Utility Worker - Kitchen Assistant serves as the primary point of contact for maintaining a clean and safe kitchen and dining room. This includes performing sanitation duties regularly. The Utility Worker - Kitchen Assistant may also manage the dining room, assist in meal preparation and serving, and receive department orders.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs sanitation duties including pot washing, cleaning equipment, sweeping and mopping floors after each meal, cleaning kitchen equipment, storage areas, walls, shelving, and countertops.
  • Operates dishwashing machine during meal periods as needed.
  • Maintains and cleans walk-in freezer and dry storage areas.
  • Reports cleaning supply needs to supervisor.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety codes, following Saint Francis House policies and procedures.
  • Prepares meal ingredients for the Cook, including washing, peeling, cutting, and slicing.
  • Follows HACCP principles in meal service to ensure food safety and health standards.
  • Assists volunteers with dining room sanitation and pantry services.
  • Prepares and serves beverages.
  • Performs food service receiving functions.
  • Available to work weekends and holidays as assigned.
  • Adheres to agency code of conduct.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Maintain current knowledge and skills.
  • Practice safe and clean kitchen and dining area maintenance.
  • Safely operate kitchen equipment and appliances.
  • Understand food safety standards and procedures.
  • Be detail-oriented, multi-task, and work well in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, stressful environment.
  • Understand and commit to a person-centered, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed approach.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Required Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Additional education in culinary arts is a plus.
  • Six months of kitchen and dining experience.
  • Equivalent education and experience may substitute.
  • Culinary training or ServSafe Certification is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Experience in homeless services is a plus.
  • Lived experience with homelessness or recovery is a plus.
  • Experience in human service shelters or programs is a plus.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
