Cobb County Government seeks a maintenance worker for their Water System to manage installation, repair, and maintenance tasks related to water and sewer lines. This position requires physical agility, communication skills, and certification within specified timelines to ensure safe and efficient operations in varied environments.
These positions are located in the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division.
These positions will work four 10-hour shifts a week and will be required to be on a scheduled on-call status. The schedule will be as follows:
Responsibilities include installing, maintaining, repairing, and replacing water and sewer lines and related system components. Tasks involve locating manholes, service connections, valves, and utilities; assisting with sewer tap installations; clearing debris; inspecting and evaluating system conditions; diagnosing leaks and blockages; excavating infrastructure; installing repair fittings; replacing service lines; performing confined space entries; cleaning manholes and lines; and changing manhole lids.
Travel to sites, read maps, utilize GPS and GIS maps, update department databases, and maintain documentation are also required.
The role involves gathering tools and materials, performing preventive maintenance, minor repairs, and equipment maintenance. Additional activities include saw cutting driveways and sidewalks, restoring landscapes, installing sod, and applying seed or mulch.
Operate and maintain various tools and equipment such as cameras, shovels, jet hoses, jackhammers, saws, and others necessary for completing tasks.
Adhere to safety procedures, monitor work environments, direct traffic, and wear protective gear. Provide emergency coverage as needed and work on standby schedules.
Document manhole locations using GPS, assess sewer infrastructure conditions, perform smoke testing, and manage flow meters and CCTV equipment.
Minimum qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED, two years of relevant experience, a valid Driver's License, and within one year, obtain a Class A CDL. Certifications in Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation, and Flagger are required within nine months.
This position requires physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and lifting objects up to 100 pounds.
Some tasks require sensory perception such as color discrimination, odors, sounds, and visual cues. Communication skills are also necessary.
Environmental factors include exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, extreme temperatures, hazardous materials, heights, confined spaces, machinery, traffic, wildlife, and other hazards.
