Job summary

The City and County of Denver is seeking a Utility Worker II to support transportation operations across the city. The role involves semi-skilled labor on construction and maintenance projects, operating equipment after obtaining a CDL, and assisting a crew with traffic control and safety tasks.

Candidates should have basic construction knowledge, driving experience, and be willing to work in varying weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • General construction knowledge required.
  • Driving experience required.
  • Experience with conduit, piping or plumbing is preferred.
  • CDL is required and Tanker endorsement may be needed within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and road environments.

Responsibilities

  • Work on a Heavy Construction Signals team or a Signs and Markings team.
  • Perform semi-skilled and labor tasks on construction, maintenance, and repair projects.
  • Operate light to heavy equipment after CDL is obtained.
  • Assist with general labor and safety tasks on a crew with Operators.
  • Cross-train with Signal Techs and Equipment Operators.
  • Operate trucks and heavy equipment as needed.
  • Place and remove barricades and traffic control devices according to regulations.
  • Participate in snow removal duties.

The Division of Transportation Operations is responsible for managing the performance of the transportation infrastructure. Sections within the Division include curbside management, traffic signals, signs and markings, and system operations.

Specifically, as a Utility Worker II you will:

  • Work on a Heavy Construction Signals team or a Signs and Markings team
  • Perform semi-skilled and light to heavy physical labor on a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair projects
  • Operation of light weight motorized equipment and hand and power tools
  • Assist with general labor, safety, and related work tasks on a crew with Equipment Operators
  • Cross Train with Signal Techs and Equipment Operators
  • Operate equipment such as box truck, auger truck, dump trucks, Mini Excavators and other heavy equipment after CDL is obtained
  • Place and remove barricades, cones, and other traffic control and safety devices in and around work areas for construction and maintenance projects in accordance with traffic regulation requirements
  • Participate in snow removal duties.
What You'll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • General construction knowledge
  • Driving experience
  • Conduit, piping or plumbing experience
  • Have a CDL
  • Willingness to work in inclement weather, road environments, dust, fumes, etc.
  • Desire to follow a career path and promote to other positions within the department
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Education Requirement: None
  • Experience Requirement: One (1) year of experience performing unskilled labor work.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement
  • License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL "B") with appropriate endorsements within six (6) months of employment and must be kept current as a condition of employment. By position, requires a CDL Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of hire. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
