Cobb County Government seeks dedicated individuals for water system maintenance. This role includes installing and repairing water and sewer lines, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, and involves physical labor. Ideal candidates will possess a high school diploma or GED, with preference given to those with construction experience. This position also requires working in various environmental conditions and obtaining specific certifications within the first nine months.
This position is located in the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division.
Swing shift is Monday through Thursday from 1:30 pm to midnight. On call every week from Monday at midnight until Thursday at midnight.
Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces water and sewer lines and related system components. Responsibilities include locating manholes, service connections, valves, and other utilities; assisting with new sewer tap installations; clearing debris from manholes, water and sewer lines, sewer stream crossings, easements, valve boxes, etc.; inspecting and evaluating system conditions; diagnosing leaks, blockages, or other issues; excavating around water and sewer infrastructure; installing repair fittings; replacing service lines; performing confined space entries into permit-required confined spaces as needed; cleaning manholes and lines; and changing sewer rings and lids on manholes.
Gathering tools and equipment needed for work activities, transporting materials, cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment, performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs, and notifying supervisors of equipment needs.
Performing related activities such as saw cutting driveways, sidewalks, curbs, and roads during repairs; assisting with landscape, property, and area restoration; installing sod or applying seed, hay, pine straw, and lime where needed.
Operating and maintaining equipment including cameras, shovels, sharpshooters, probing rods, jet hoses, jackhammers, pipe saws, hand saws, chainsaws, pipe cutters, and other tools.
Adhering to safety procedures: monitoring the work environment, using safety equipment, flagging and directing traffic, placing markers, signs, and cones, and wearing PPE.
Providing emergency coverage as required and working on standby status per departmental schedules.
Performing manual construction and maintenance tasks such as pipe laying and cutting, sewer tap repairs, manhole and valve box repairs, clearing obstructions, assisting equipment operators, and related labor.
Assisting in documenting locations of manholes using GPS equipment.
Assisting in sewer infrastructure condition assessments through visual inspections, electronic measurements, smoke testing, and entering manholes for flow meter and CCTV equipment.
Performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required; experience in construction or infrastructure maintenance preferred. Valid Driver's License preferred. Must obtain certifications in Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation, and Flagger within nine months of hire.
Tasks require exerting heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting objects up to 100 pounds.
Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require perceiving colors, odors, sounds, textures, and visual cues. Communication skills are also necessary.
