Job summary

UNC Health's Wayne UNC Health Care facility in North Carolina is seeking a dedicated Utility Worker to maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment. You will manage pot room, surfaces, equipment, and assist with receiving and stocking items to support daily operations.

Qualified applicants will have a high school diploma or equivalent; six months of similar experience preferred. The role requires flexibility, the ability to stand long hours, and a commitment to safety standards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; any higher education from an accredited college will supersede this requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a customer focus while performing duties.
  • Maintains cleanliness of pots, pans, work areas and equipment using chemicals to ensure sanitary standards.
  • Keeps the pot room clean and reports any problems to the kitchen manager.
  • Monitors water temperature and chemical levels for sanitary wash cycle.
  • Washes and stores all tableware and kitchenware.
  • Cleans storage areas by sweeping and mopping; completes opening/closing checklists.
  • Transfers supplies and equipment between storage and work areas.
  • Receives, lifts, moves, stores and verifies items on invoices; rotates stock.
  • Attends allergy and foodborne illness trainings; adheres to HACCP and safety policies.

Summary

The Utility Worker’s primary objective is to provide a clean and safe kitchen area for our employees (teammates) by maintaining the pot room, kitchen work areas, equipment and utensils as well as receiving merchandise, unloading, and stocking shelves.

Responsibilities
  • Maintains a customer focus while performing duties.
  • Assumes 100% responsibility for the cleanliness of pots & pans, work tables, walls, refrigerators and equipment using specific chemicals to ensure sanitary standards.
  • Keeps the pot room clean and reports any functional or mechanical problems to kitchen manager immediately.
  • Monitors pot room water temperature and chemical levels to ensure sanitary wash cycle.
  • Washes and stores all tableware and kitchenware.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness or storage areas by sweeping and mopping.
  • Completes opening and closing checklists.
  • Removes trash and garbage to designated areas.
  • Maintains adequate levels of detergent and cleaning supplies.
  • Cleans food preparation and production areas as required.
  • Closes the kitchen properly and follows the closing checklist for kitchen stations.
  • May assist others in closing the kitchen.
  • Transfers supplies and equipment within and between storage and work areas.
  • Receives, lifts, moves, stores and verifies items on invoices.
  • Receives and processes a wide variety of incoming freight and rotates stock to ensure freshness following First In, First Out.
  • Unpacks and examines incoming shipments and rejects damaged items.
  • Attends all allergy and foodborne illness in-service trainings.
  • Complies with all hospital or Sodexo HACCP, safety and risk management policies and procedures.
  • Reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner.
  • Participates in regular safety meetings, safety trainings and hazard assessments.
  • Attends training programs as designated.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Plays an active role in maintaining a safe working environment throughout the facility for all teammates.
  • Presents self in a professional manner to others at all times and understands that honesty and ethics are essential.
  • Keeps Supervisor or Manager informed of any issues, concerns, or problems.
  • Is able to work a flexible schedule to meet the coverage needs of the department, including nights, weekends and some holidays.

Licensure/Certification
  • None required.
Experience
  • Six months experience in a similar role preferred.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet department needs.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time (up to 8 hours).

  • Basic knowledge of MS Office and able to learn new software.

Valid NC Driver’s License: No

If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
