Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Lead worker in repair and maintenance of water and wastewater system.
  • Provide guidance and instruction to Utilities Service workers and Senior Service workers.
  • Plan, lead and assist in cleaning and inspections of gravity sanitary sewer/storm water lines.
  • Maintain records and submit reports of work performed.
  • Operates and maintains applicable tools and equipment in a safe condition.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work areas and removes debris as needed.
  • Schedules crews and personnel and timekeeping.
  • Stand-by duty for off-duty emergency call-ins to effect repairs.
  • Inspect work in progress and adjust schedules to ensure timely completion.
  • Supervise and train crews in the field; resolve complaints.

Job description

This is a non-exempt position, which is manual labor and supervisory work over a crew of skilled workers performing a variety of manual tasks. An employee in this classification is responsible for the crew and that assigned tasks are performed properly and efficiently, and that work schedules are maintained. Work is received from a superior in the form of specific assignments and is reviewed in progress and upon completion.

Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause. This position shall fill in for the crew Forman in his/her absence

  • Lead worker in the repair and maintenance of water and wastewater system
  • Provides guidance and instruction to Utilities Service workers and Senior Service workers
  • May plan, lead and assist in cleaning and inspections of gravity sanitary sewer/storm water lines
  • Maintains records and submits reports of work perfumed
  • Operates and maintains applicable tools and equipment in a safe and proper working condition
  • Maintains cleanliness of work areas: removes debris, as needed
  • Estimates material needs; procures materials, equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Operates heavy equipment
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations and standard operating procedures
  • Reads and utilizes drawings, maps GIS and utilities atlases
  • Schedules crews and personnel and timekeeping
  • Will be required to perform “stand-by duty". being available and responding to off duty emergency call-ins to effect repairs
  • May inspect work in progress, modify or adjust work schedule and related factors to ensure that projects are completed.
  • May supervise and train crews in field; resolve complaints; operate various types of equipment; perform maintenance tasks.
  • Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks.
  • This position does not have final procurement authority.
  • Performs related work as required and as directed.Ability to operate a city vehicle and possess a Class B CDL with tanker endorsement.
  • Considerable knowledge of radio transmitting equipment, meters and service lines.
  • Knowledge of the materials, tools, and equipment used in the work assigned.
  • Knowledge of the safety occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Ability to use the following programs: (Outlook, Excel, Word, ADP (Payroll), Hansen (work orders), City PGIS system).
  • Knowledge of modern methods of personal supervision.
  • Ability to deal with customers and provide customer support. An employee in this position must also be skilled in defusing aggressive situations with customers.
  • Ability to read and understand record drawings.
  • Ability to comply with all State and local regulations regarding water distribution systems.
  • Ability to multitask and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal, state, and local regulators as well as the general public.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of 3 years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water distribution systems, services, meters, sanitary sewer lines, and other Utilities infrastructure. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job may be considered.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid State of Florida Commercial driver’s license.
  • Must possess a Class B Water Distribution Operator license issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection or obtain one within two years of employment in the position.

The work requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel, lift and/or carry and push/pull various objects.
