Job Summary
The Utility Plant Operator - Mechanical operates, maintains, and repairs campus steam, condensate, water, and sewer systems and related equipment.
Essential Functions
- Test, repair, or replace valves, fittings, and pipe insulation in the steam distribution system.
- Make water and sewer connections within manholes, vaults, and trenches.
- Install and repair underground steam, water, storm drains, and sewer lines using plans and drawings.
- Apply knowledge of underground distribution systems, insulation, and safety procedures.
- Diagnose and repair issues related to assigned systems and perform complex work where standard methods are unavailable.
- Perform all types of valving and pressure boosting work.
- Lay out and install steam, water, and sewer systems in manholes and vaults.
- Make pipe and insulation repairs in various settings.
- Supervise lower-classification personnel and perform construction work following safety standards.
- Locate, diagnose, and repair failures in utility systems.
- Perform repairs and installations using welding techniques, obtaining necessary certifications.
- Interpret maps, work orders, and diagrams.
- Apply construction standards and perform rigging for installations and removals.
- Verify excavation requests using technology and operate departmental vehicles.
Other Functions
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Pipefitter License.
- Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
- At least 3 years of experience with steam utility systems.
- Knowledge of underground utility operation, safety, and repair techniques.
- Ability to weld steel pipes and structural steel.
- Skill in using utility tools and reading diagrams.
- Physical ability to perform strenuous activities, including heavy lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
- Ability to work overtime and with outside contractors.
- Must obtain Water Distribution Grade 2 License and Backflow Prevention certification within specified timeframes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Construction Supervisor license.
- Previous experience with underground steam systems.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
- Work involves physical activity in varied weather, including climbing, underground work, and heavy lifting.
Additional Details
- This position is on call and essential personnel.
Work Schedule
- Monday-Friday, 7am-3pm, 40 hours/week.
Salary
Grade 18, Step 6, special recruitment rate.
