THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on the skilled operation of boilers and related equipment to produce steam, heat, and hot water for Torrance State Hospital. It involves overseeing shift duties, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring continuous and safe plant operations. As a Utility Plant Operator 2, you will perform the following duties:

• Boiler Operation: Operate boilers and auxiliary equipment to maintain heat and hot water across the facility
• Shift Leadership: Direct plant staff, assign work, and demonstrate proper methods to support smooth shift operations
• System Monitoring: Conduct systematic checks of equipment, document readings, and report abnormal conditions to supervisors
• Water Management: Maintain correct boiler water levels and perform daily chemical testing and treatment
• Record Keeping: Enter readings, complete preventive maintenance work orders, and maintain accurate shift logs

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
• Work hours are 2nd shift (2:30 PM to 10:30 PM), Wednesday - Sunday.
• Overtime: As required and subject to emergency call-in.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• One year of experience as a Utility Plant Operator 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• One year of semi-skilled work experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional utility plant systems and related equipment; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes six months of semi-skilled work experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional utility plant systems and related equipment.
