Job summary

Steve Tate & Sons Plumbing is seeking a Utility Mechanic in Mount Airy, NC. 1st shift, typically 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, with travel to regional job sites as needed.

The role supports plumbing, utility, construction, and equipment operations by maintaining, repairing, installing, and troubleshooting mechanical systems and equipment used in daily field operations. You will work with plumbers, foremen, and management to keep operations safe and productive.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a mechanic, equipment mechanic, utility mechanic, plumber, or maintenance technician preferred.
  • Knowledge of construction and utility equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical and hydraulic systems.
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems and diagnostics.
  • Ability to read equipment manuals and plans.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on equipment, pumps, generators, and other mechanical systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and plumbing problems.
  • Maintain and repair excavators, skid steers, pumps, generators, trailers, and other utility equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to reduce downtime.
  • Assist field crews with installation and maintenance of utility systems.
  • Coordinate with foremen and project managers regarding equipment needs.

Position Summary

The Utility Mechanic is responsible for supporting plumbing, utility, construction, and equipment operations by maintaining, repairing, installing, and troubleshooting mechanical systems, tools, vehicles, and equipment used in daily field operations. This position works closely with plumbers, utility crews, foremen, and management to keep equipment and jobsite operations safe, reliable, and productive.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on company equipment, vehicles, pumps, generators, compressors, and other mechanical systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and plumbing-related equipment problems.
  • Maintain and repair excavators, skid steers, trenching equipment, pumps, generators, trailers, and other utility equipment as needed.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to reduce equipment downtime and extend service life.
  • Assist field crews with installation, repair, and maintenance of water, sewer, drainage, and plumbing utility systems.
  • Troubleshoot pumps, valves, piping systems, motors, and related components.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, cutting, and basic machining when necessary.
  • Inspect equipment before and after use and report safety or mechanical concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, parts, and equipment condition.
  • Coordinate with foremen and project managers regarding equipment needs and repairs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop and work area.
  • Operate company vehicles and equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Assist with emergency repairs and respond to equipment breakdowns in the field when required.
  • Follow OSHA requirements, company safety policies, and manufacturer maintenance procedures.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a mechanic, equipment mechanic, utility mechanic, plumber, maintenance technician, or related position preferred.
  • Knowledge of construction and utility equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical and hydraulic systems.
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems and diagnostics.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and mechanical tools.
  • Ability to read equipment manuals, service information, and basic construction or utility plans.
  • Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
  • Plumbing or underground utility experience is a plus.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a field crew.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb, bend, kneel, stoop, crawl, and work in confined or difficult-to-access areas.
  • Ability to safely work around heavy equipment, excavation sites, vehicles, and active construction operations.
  • Ability to work extended hours or respond to emergency equipment issues when necessary.
