Utility Management Consultant – Water Business Group

HDR seeks a Utility Management Consultant for its North Carolina Water Business Group. The role may be based in any of HDR’s NC offices: Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston‑Salem, Asheville, or Wilmington. The consultant will be the cornerstone of project delivery, overseeing and supporting both small‑scale single‑discipline planning efforts and large, multi‑disciplinary design projects. This position is ideal for someone who thrives on managing details, building strong client relationships, and leading talented technical teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a strategic expert with recognized authority in water and wastewater systems and utility operations.
  • Provide professional consultation around asset management, operational, and water and wastewater infrastructure challenges.
  • Plan, direct, and manage projects to solve water and wastewater utility challenges.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise the work of staff of professionals and technicians as needed.
  • Serve as Project Manager on projects, including tracking project budgets, monitoring financial performance, and aligning resources to keep deliverables on time and within scope.
  • Build and maintain lasting client relationships, taking part in marketing, contract negotiations, and project delivery meetings.
  • Lead internal and external meetings, workshops, and technical discussions to align stakeholders and drive progress.
  • Perform technical analyses and prepare clear, concise technical reports.
  • Mentor and provide leadership to junior staff focused on developing strong technical skills in water/wastewater engineering.
  • Support firm‑wide initiatives and perform additional responsibilities as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in engineering, business, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS, Power BI, and/or SQL Server.
  • Experience in the A/E/C industry; local candidates are preferred.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience.
  • Efficient use of the internet and other electronic and hard copy media for research.
  • Strong Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Project, Visio, Access, and Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to compile and present summary‑level information.
  • Ability to obtain, cleanse, merge, and analyze data from multiple sources.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong relationship, organizational, and follow‑up skills.
  • Self‑starter with a proven track record of accomplishments.
  • Commitment to being an active participant of the employee‑owned culture.
Location

United States – North Carolina – Winston‑Salem (primary; other locations include Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Asheville).
