Job summary

The City of Sheridan is seeking a dedicated individual to fill the position of Utility Maintenance Operator, performing technical duties in the maintenance, repair, and operation of water and wastewater systems. The role may start as Operator in Training or Operator I depending on certification level.

Ideal candidates will work in varied conditions and may obtain Water Distribution I and Wastewater Collection I licenses within one year of employment.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level associated with completing high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience or apprenticeship/internship related to the major duties.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Wyoming commercial driver's license within 6 months.
  • Development of Water Distribution I and Wastewater Collection I licenses within 1 year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and repair of sanitary sewer mains, point repairs, manhole repairs, lift station maintenance and acceptance of new infrastructure.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs of water mains, pressure reducing valves, pump stations, reservoirs and fire hydrants; accepts new infrastructure.
  • Performs excavation of live underground utilities using safe procedures.
  • Operates tandem axle dump trucks and other equipment as needed.
  • Operates and maintains a complex electrical hydropower station for power generation.
  • Flushes water lines and conducts water sampling for quality control.
  • Installs live water main taps for customer service lines.
  • Monitors anode health with corrosion protection systems.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains fire hydrants; operates valves as needed.
  • Operates, programs and maintains water meters for the MiNet system.
  • Maintains sanitary sewer systems with jet/vac and CCTV equipment.
  • Inspects new construction of water mains, sanitary and storm sewers.
  • Installs and repairs manholes.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies when on call.
  • Responds to customer questions and creates work orders in asset management software.

Job description

The City of Sheridan is actively recruiting a hard-working individual that is looking to work in a variety of conditions with a positive attitude to fill the position of Utility Maintenance Operator. This position is responsible for performing technical duties in the maintenance, repair and operation of the water and wastewater systems. The ideal candidate will have the ability to obtain a Water Distribution I license, and Wastewater Collection I license within one year of employment.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for performing technical duties in the maintenance, repair and operation of the water and wastewater systems. An incumbent in this position may be designated "Utility Maintenance Operator in Training" or "Utility Maintenance Operator I" depending on certification level.

MAJOR DUTIES
  • Performs maintenance and repair of sanitary sewer: mains, point repairs, manhole repairs, lift station maintenance and acceptance of new infrastructure
  • Performs maintenance and repairs of: water mains, pressure reducing valves, pump stations reservoirs, fire hydrants and acceptance of new infrastructure.
  • Complex and dangerous excavation of live underground utilities utilizing advanced critical thinking and troubleshooting.
  • Operates tandem axle dump trucks and other equipment as needed.
  • Operates and maintains a highly complex electrical hydropower station - power generation
  • Flushes water lines to maintain clean water mains and conducts necessary water sampling.
  • Install live water main taps for customer service lines.
  • Monitors anode health with corrosion protection systems.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains fire hydrants; exercises valves as needed.
  • Operates, programs and maintains water meters for the MiNet meter reading system.
  • Maintains sanitary sewer systems with combination jet/vac and CCTV equipment.
  • Inspects new construction of water mains, sanitary and storm sewers.
  • Installs and repairs manholes.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies when on call.
  • Responds to and resolves customer questions and complaints.
  • Creates work orders for all tasks performed in our asset management software(Carteraph).
  • Attends required classes.
  • Reads and interprets maps.
  • Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of the materials, equipment, procedures, and practices employed in water and wastewater installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Knowledge in the installation, repair, and maintenance of sewer lift station and pump station systems.
  • Knowledge in the operation of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge in oral and written communication
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of Water Distribution I license and Wastewater Collection I license within 1 year of employment.
