Job description

Utility Maintenance Mechanic (Maintenance)

The Department of Facilities Management is responsible for meeting the University's evolving needs. Located within Facilities Management, Utility Services maintenance handles all corrective and preventative maintenance related to the University's district energy plants, including the production of heating steam, chilled water, electrical generation, and distribution across the Norman campus.

Duties:

  • Ensures all operations and equipment are in good, safe working condition through regular inspection, maintenance, and repair.
  • Performs assembly and modifications on systems using hand and power tools, troubleshooting and repairing as needed.
  • Maintains cooling tower operations, including repairing/installing fan motors, gear boxes, valves, screens, and sump pumps.
  • Monitors chiller conditions by taking readings, checking oil levels, and linkages.
  • Checks transformers and takes oil samples for testing.
  • Conducts preventative and scheduled maintenance, inspecting and replacing parts as necessary.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs electrical panels, pumps, valves, and piping systems.
  • Operates additional equipment such as air compressors, dryers, tanks, regulators, filters, and blow-down valves.
  • Reads gas, electric, and water meters monthly, recording data accurately.
  • Researches the availability of parts for controls, electric systems, pumps, and motors; orders supplies, machine parts, and chemicals accordingly.
  • Performs various duties as needed to fulfill the role effectively.

Required Education: High school diploma or GED, AND

  • 24 months experience in electrical instrumentation repair and mechanical repair of large equipment such as boilers, diesel engines, generators, or chillers.

Skills:

  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot systems using AC/DC circuits, including high voltage.
  • Ability to read schematic diagrams and locate components on equipment.
  • Proficient in using a multi-meter to check volts and test devices.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow written instructions.
  • Skilled in using hand and power tools, control panels, and switches.

Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, grasp, reach, twist, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Work in a power plant environment with exposure to steam, electricity/high voltage, hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures, and noise. May be designated as an essential position during emergencies and may require overnight stays on campus.
