Job description

OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE

The primary objective of this position is to perform the prompt and accurate locating of city utilities; however, this position is also an integral member of the city’s sewer and water utilities team and thus will also perform semi-skilled tasks in maintaining Chanhassen’s public utility infrastructure.

PAY

Expected Hiring Range: $28.53-$31.17 Hourly
Full Salary Range: $28.53-$39.84 Hourly

RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Water Production Foreman


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Receive locate request from the Gopher State One Call System
  2. Review departmental records in order to locate and mark underground utilities
  3. Locates city utilities in the field, responds to meet requests by contractors and other utility providers, and completes the necessary locate documentation for record-keeping
  4. Assists with the repair of utility equipment such as; pumps, motors, controls, chemical feeds and other equipment utilized in water/collections facilities.
  5. Inspect and maintain sewer collections system including repair or breaks, cleaning of lines, maintenance of sewer structures. Services lift station pumps, controls, and grounds maintenance.
  6. Install, replace and repair water meters and meter reading radios. Troubleshoot issues with automatic meter reading systems.
  7. Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities that are assigned or apparent
  8. Assists with work tasks in other divisions of the Public Works Department when assigned
  9. Performs snow removal activities when assigned.
  10. Some preference will be given to candidates skilled in the operation of various maintenance equipment and vehicles such as skid steer, vac truck, trailer jetter, excavator, etc.


REQUIREMENTS

  1. High school graduate or equivalent GED
  2. Ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement within 6 months of employment.
  3. Ability to obtain class D water operator license within 18 months of employment
  4. Ability to obtain class SD sewer collections license within 18 months of employment
  5. Ability to act proactively, responsive, and a self-starter.
  6. Must possess character traits that support being part of a team, exhibits a positive attitude, shows leadership, while also being able to work independently.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Upon demonstrated understanding of Chanhassen’s utility system, this position will besubject to a rotating 24 Hour on-call schedule. When on-call, the employee must have the ability to respond to the Public Works Facility within 35 minutes of being notified.
  1. May be required to work during emergency conditions and adverse weather conditions.
  1. Frequently positions self to maneuver objects weighing up to 25 lbs. and occasionally weighing up to 50 lbs.
  1. Occasionally position self to use up to 70 lbs. of force and up to 200 lbs. of torque occasionally, to operate valve, hydrants, etc.
  1. Ability to properly use and maneuver various powered and non-powered tools and/or equipment (to include, but not limited to, shovels, probing equipment, measuring devices, wrenches, etc.).
  1. Pre-employment physical, drug testing, and criminal background check will be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Most work is performed in a field environment involving working inside and outside of buildings and vehicles. Seasonal conditions can include excessive heat or cold, and may involve working in wet, muddy, slippery, dusty, or windy conditions. There is often exposure to moving traffic and equipment, and great attention to detail must be exercised when working in tight quarters or around other people. Normal hours are 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, M-F, but employees will need to be available for 24-hour on-call scheduling.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  1. Must comply with organizational and department policies.
  2. Must pass pre-employment physical, pre-employment drug test, and criminal history background checks.
  3. Must possess a valid Class D driver’s license.
