Brief Description

The Utility Locator is responsible for identifying and marking gas, water, and sewer lines by referencing utility prints and using specific locating equipment. The candidate must be flexible to work in all types of terrain and weather conditions, able to succeed under stressful situations, and always conduct themselves professionally. The candidate must also be motivated to work independently and demonstrate good time management skills to plan and accomplish the workload as required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Works safely, follows safe work practices, and reports unsafe work conditions.
  • Locates underground utility lines specified by the client.
  • Interprets job order tickets, email requests, phone calls, blueprints, and maps to efficiently route and perform duties.
  • Uses utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and various pipe and electronic locating equipment.
  • Utilizes stakes, flags, and/or paint to mark the location of underground utilities.
  • Prepares reports, forms, and memos to document work completed and problems encountered or resolved.
  • Verifies field information and notifies the designated City departments regarding updates and corrections.
  • Develops knowledge and understanding of underground facilities infrastructure.
  • Operates company vehicle safely and according to policy.
  • Performs work in all weather conditions, during normal and after hours.
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Skills

Education/Experience: High School Diploma or GED. 1-year utility location experience and/or 2-3 years water/wastewater experience preferred.

Licenses/Certifications: Valid Driver’s License. C Operator Distribution/Collection System Operator license preferred or C Operator Water/Wastewater License. Other licenses may vary according to specific site and assignments.

Technical: Proficiency with Microsoft Office, internet, tablets, and mobile devices. Knowledge of OSHA, DOT regulations, and Utility SOPs. Ability to complete regulatory documentation and reports.

Communication: Clear and professional communication with homeowners, contractors, and utility representatives. Maintains composure, collaborates, and promotes diversity, respect, and accountability. Challenges others through productive discussion.

Problem Solving & Quality: Attention to detail, complex issue resolution, interpretation of drawings and GIS data, and development of innovative solutions.

Managing For Results: Follows policies and SOPs, delegates, prioritizes, manages work, and delivers effective feedback.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequently lift 40-50 pounds; load, unload, move equipment/tools; sit, squat, bend, crawl, climb, reach. Occasionally perform full range of motion with items up to 50 pounds. Work in all terrains and hazards (grass, gravel, ditches) and environments (construction sites, highways, industrial, private property).

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work in all terrains and hazards, around moving equipment, subject to weather, fumes, gases, and dust.
