Job summary

Abacus Corporation is seeking a Utility Locator / Field Technician to accurately locate and mark underground gas utilities, document findings in digital systems, and support field crews. This role helps prevent utility damage and ensures safe project execution.

You will read maps, operate locating equipment, follow 811/DOT/OSHA guidelines, and perform routine equipment maintenance. The position requires teamwork, physical tasks, and a commitment to safety.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Locate and mark underground gas utilities using industry-standard equipment.
• Interpret utility maps, prints, and system data to verify utility locations.
• Document and map findings accurately using company software.
• Communicate findings with project managers, supervisors, and customers.
• Maintain and properly care for locating equipment.
• Follow all 811, damage prevention, OSHA, and DOT requirements.
• Support hydrovac and excavation crews as part of a 2-person or larger crew.
• Assist with hydrovac equipment and excavation activities, including work in confined spaces.
• Perform manual labor, including shoveling, moving debris, lifting manhole covers, and preparing work areas.
• Assist with inventory pickup, sorting, and delivery.
• Perform routine equipment inspections and minor repairs.
• Maintain clean and organized equipment and work areas.
• Complete service tickets, paperwork, and daily documentation.
• Participate in safety meetings and maintain effective communication with team members and customers.
• Maintain reliable attendance and perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs. repeatedly and perform physical tasks including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and climbing.
• Basic computer/tablet and mobile application skills.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous utility locating experience, preferably with gas utilities.
• Knowledge of underground gas distribution systems.
• Experience using electromagnetic locating equipment.
• Experience reading utility maps and as-built drawings.
• Knowledge of confined-space entry and construction safety.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation skills.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to troubleshoot problems and work independently.
