What does work as a utility locator and potholer/vacuum operator look like? Honestly, it depends on the day – and the weather! You could be working in the rain, heat, cold – conditions are often unpredictable. You’ll likely encounter the occasional snake, tick, or dog, too. But you’ll also be surrounded by beautiful countryside on various terrain as you go about your work.

On Any Given Day, You Will
- Perform utility designating/locating to investigate underground utilities using various geophysical locating tools (pipe and cable locator, magnetic locator, ground penetrating radar, etc.).
- Safely operate vacuum excavation and hydrovac trucks and equipment. This includes driving to assigned job sites to excavate, load, dig, and locate underground utilities
- Perform basic mathematical calculations, take field measurements, and document daily activities.
- Work well in a team environment, outdoors in all kinds of weather, and will be committed to completing projects efficiently and professionally.
- Read and interpret utility plans; thoroughly searching for utilities which may include electric, cable, telecommunication, traffic control, gas, water, sewer lines and other underground utilities using locating equipment; provide accurate sketches and documentation.
- Be willing to be trained for and willing to work in confined spaces on occasion.
- Be responsible for designating utilities and performing test holes in different areas for an array of different project types from inner city to rural. At times in traffic or high stress/ risk areas.
Required Qualifications
- 1-5 years of experience as a utility locator/potholer technician.
- Experience using or willingness to learn how to use locating equipment, including induction-based, metal detection, ground-penetrating radar and vacuum excavation equipment.
- Willing to travel, work hard and spend most of the day outdoors.
- Ambitious and able to work efficiently with proven success working independently.
- Able to bend, walk long distances across all types of terrain and lift up to 100 lbs multiple times a day.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Ability to be self-motivated when working alone and as a part of a team and manage time properly.
- Adherence to company safety requirements always and willingness to be a leader in safety.
- Understanding of or willingness to learn ASCE SUE quality levels.
Desired Skills And Experiences
- Previous experience in potholing or drilling operations.
- Prior military service a plus.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety procedures a plus.
- A strong communicator with basic computer skills.
- Understands technical concepts and handles multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues with designating/locating in congested areas when signal is not ideal: bleed off, ghost signal, no access, no ground, weak signal, etc.
- Use of proper designating/locating techniques and methods: bonding/un-bonding, 360-degree sweep, proper grounding.
- Personable, self-motivated, dependable, punctual, detail-oriented and organized.
- Interested in marketing SUE services.
- Ability to communicate with contractors and the public in addition to home/landowners.
- Willingness to go the extra mile or work long hours when the job requires it.
- Accuracy and detail focused.
- Good attitude and proud of your work.

Our good-faith compensation approach is fair and equitable, and takes into consideration only permissible factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, training, skills, and experience, and geographic location where the work is performed. A salary range for this posting is $48000 - $68000 / year. The foregoing salary range represents what the company believes, in good-faith, it will pay for the posted opportunity. The individual selected for this role will be evaluated with the compensation factors in mind and placed appropriately.
