Job summary

Motive Telecomm is seeking a Utility Locator to identify and mark underground utilities prior to excavation, working outdoors in varying weather and ensuring safety. You will use techniques including visual, electromagnetic, and GPR to locate lines in residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

The role requires attention to detail, the ability to read maps, document findings, and collaborate with construction teams while maintaining excellent communication with contractors and clients.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training is a plus.
• 2 years of experience in underground utilities including telecom, electric, cable, gas, fiber optic, water, and sewer including GPR (Preferred)
• Strong understanding of utility marking standards and safety protocols.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record; operate company vehicle safely.
• Communicate effectively with contractors, clients, and team members regarding utility locations and any potential conflicts.
• Capacity to work on multiple concurrent projects while maintaining excellent technical and communication skills.
• Strong leadership skills to mentor and influence internal teams, subcontractors, and vendors
• Ability to organize and prioritize projects
• Strong understanding of underground construction, boring, micro trenching, and fiber placement
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
• Must be able to walk extensively, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day

Responsibilities

• Develop an understanding of local utility infrastructure and regulations within the City of Oceanside
• Partner with other experienced Locators to mark underground utility lines
• Perform field surveys to locate and mark underground utilities using specialized equipment (GPR)
• Document and report all findings and discrepancies accurately in a timely manner, Identify and document the location and depth of utilities such as water, sewer, gas, cable, oil, and electric lines, using digital mapping tools including ArcGIS and Google Maps
• Assist in maintaining and calibrating utility locating equipment.
• Provide exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries and concerns related to utility locations.
• Read and interpret utility maps and as-builts to inform locating efforts.
• Prepare detailed field notes and document site conditions relevant to project requirements.
• Collaborate with construction team to deliver comprehensive field services, including utility investigation, locating, inspections, land survey activities, traffic control, and more.
• Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company policies while on-site

The Utility Locator plays a crucial role in ensuring that underground utilities are accurately identified and marked prior to excavation activities.
