Job description

Applied Ecology, Inc., an environmental and engineering consulting business with a rapidly expanding footprint, is seeking a highly motivated and dependable Utility Locate Technician to join our growing team. AEI has three offices located in Florida and is a regional leader in geospatial services, water resources, natural resources, and environmental remediation and contamination services. This field-based position will serve our Tampa area clients.

Applied Ecology is seeking an experienced candidate for this position. A Utility Locator identifies, locates, and marks the location of 811 subsurface utilities in order to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to construction excavation activities. Employees in this class are expected to act independently and responsibly to perform the work needed to complete the assigned tickets in a timely fashion. The Utility Locate Technician must use ground penetrating radar and follow standard procedures to accurately mark field utility locates. Field activities require locating and marking the existing City-owned underground infrastructure focusing on the water lines.

As the Utility Locator usually works alone, an employee in this class is expected to exercise considerable initiative in moving efficiently through the day's work assignments. Also, considerable independent judgment must be used, as the accuracy of the locate depends heavily upon how well the readings from the equipment are interpreted. The employee must also be able to read and interpret the electronic quarter section and plat maps to locate utility lines. The major objectives of the job are quality, accuracy, and thoroughness. It is important that the employee in this position communicates regularly with the project manager and is able to understand and follow instructions.

Must be able to pass a background and drug screening and possess a valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
  • Strategically plans assignments to complete assigned tasks efficiently and timely
  • Communicates with the prime contractor and employer (AEI) to receive assignments and provide status updates
  • Operates various electronic devices designed to assist in locating subsurface utilities (esp. water lines)
  • Reads and interprets utility records, as-built and survey drawings and highway design plansto find utility types and their locations
  • Prepares or updates maps as needed to make corrections for specific plats
  • Marks utilities using the designated color for the corresponding utility - must be able to distinguish colors
  • Uses personal protective gear when marking utility lines
  • Uses common hand tools to open various utility appurtenances enabling direct attachment of locating equipment
  • Prepares various clear and concise written reports and forms including vehicle mileage reports, daily time sheets, work completed documents, etc.
  • Uses Vericlock (or other AEI-provided time tracking program) for tracking time and requesting time off
  • Interacts professionally with contractors, coworkers, and the general public
  • When asked, explain to the public a summary of the work being performed and share a provided information card
  • Operates a motor vehicle (ie. pickup truck, SUV, etc.) requiring a standard Florida Driver's License to complete locating assignments
  • Operates a laptop PC in order to obtain information regarding excavation locations, to input status of work performed, communicate with the project manager, track payroll hours, and request time off
  • Sets up and removes traffic cones to safely mark utilities located in and along roads
  • Works safely in a variety of hazardous environments such as construction sites and traffic rights-of-way to perform locate assignments, setting up traffic cones and wearing all appropriate protective and safety gear.
  • Able to create legible field sketches and perform simple mathematics and basic field measurements
  • Individual must have good technical skills and be trustworthy, reliable, methodical, consistent, and a problem solver

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 2+ years of similar experiencein utility locating or other SUE field operations (vacuum excavation type trucks/equipment)
  • Entry level proficiency with survey equipment
  • Valid Florida Driver's License
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and walk for long periods of time through different types of terrain and weather conditions
  • Must be able to use computer or phone web applications to complete weekly timesheets, request time off, and communicate with co-workers and clients.
  • Team player who communicates well and is able to work independently
  • Pre-employment drug screening, background and motor vehicle checks are required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree preferred
  • >4 years of similar experience to be considered for a Technician III
  • Current Commercial Driver’s License is a plus
  • Experience training junior technicians
  • OSHA Certifications
  • Willing to work occasional evenings/weekends
