Job summary

Black Hills Energy, based in Gillette, Wyoming, seeks an Underground Utility Locator to mark and document underground gas and electric lines. You will respond to customer requests, communicate with field reps, and operate locating equipment while driving a company vehicle to job sites.

The role emphasizes safety, detail, and independent work, with full training provided. Pay ranges from $20.84 to $31.59 per hour, and requires a valid driver’s license and strong attention to detail.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of customer service experience.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets company and insurer standards.

Responsibilities

  • Drive company vehicle to job sites and operate safely.
  • Communicate with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel about underground facilities.
  • Interpret tickets, emails, calls, blueprints and maps to route and perform duties.
  • Locate underground gas and/or electric lines using maps and locating equipment.
  • Identify locations using paint, flags, and communication to excavation personnel.
  • Document and close out job orders with accurate sketches or notes.
  • Escalate issues to the Manager when needed.
  • Perform light excavation with a shovel when required.

Our Utility Locators are responsible, self-motivated individuals, who are comfortable working independently. We will train the right individual who is committed to safety, pays close attention to detail, and takes pride in completing a job well done. Your daily responsibilities include responding to requests from customers and business representatives, locating and marking underground utility lines, and documenting your findings.

Pay Range:

$20.84 - $31.59 per hour (This posting includes the full pay range for this position. Pay is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity.)

Reporting Relationship:

Gas Measurement & Transportation Supervisor

Location:

Gillette, Wyoming

Essential Functions:
  • Drive company vehicle to job sites in response to routine ticket requests, emergencies, and relocates. Operate company vehicle in a safe manner and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Act as the liaison, effectively communicating with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel, regarding underground facilities.
  • Interpret job order tickets, email requests, phone calls, blueprints and maps to efficiently route and perform duties.
  • Utilize the provided utility maps/prints and other location information, along with locating equipment, to locate underground gas and/or electric utility lines.
  • Identify utility locations through the utilization of paint, flags, matchsticks, and communicate relevant information to excavation personnel or other appropriate authorities.
  • Provide accurate documentation and/or sketches related to all locates completed. Use computer or other devices to document and close out job orders.
  • Perform all work in a timely, professional and efficient manner. Escalate investigation or higher-level issues to Manager.
  • Perform light excavation with a shovel, to expose buried utilities when necessary.

  • Other duties as assigned.
What Is Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of (6) six months of customer service (examples include: call center, restaurants, retail) experience is required.
  • This position requires driving responsibilities. You must hold and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record that meets company and insurer standards.

  • Must possess excellent communication and customer service skills.
