Job summary

Specialized Communication Services, LLC, a Crestone Services Group company, is seeking an Underground Utility Laborer in Vermont. You will support excavation crews, handle materials, and assist with equipment and safety checks on outdoor job sites.

The role requires physical stamina, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to follow directions under supervision. CDL preferred and OSHA certifications are advantageous for field advancement.

Qualifications

  • Must be physically capable of lifting up to 80 lbs. and performing strenuous labor for extended periods.
  • Outdoor work in varied weather conditions; exposure to noise and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work under direct supervision and follow safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general construction labor including site preparation, trenching, back filling, raking, and restoration.
  • Safely load, unload, and transport tools, materials, and equipment to and from job sites.
  • Operate a range of hand tools and power tools for construction, demolition, and maintenance work.
  • Assist equipment operators and crew members with utility installation tasks.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions from supervisors and ensure work meets specifications.
  • Complete daily housekeeping and clean-up tasks at job sites and facilities.
  • Participate in safety programs and conduct site inspections.

JOB SUMMARY

The General Laborer supports underground utility construction crews by performing a variety of physical tasks and site-related duties to ensure safe, timely, and efficient job completion. This role requires strong physical endurance, attention to safety, and the ability to work effectively under direct supervision in dynamic outdoor environments. The General Laborer plays a key role in jobsite preparation, maintenance, and equipment handling to support daily field operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform general construction labor including site preparation, trenching, back filling, raking, and restoration.
  • Safely load, unload, and transport tools, materials, and equipment to and from job sites.
  • Operate a range of hand tools and power tools for construction, demolition, and maintenance work.
  • Assist equipment operators and crew members with utility installation tasks.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions from supervisors, ensuring work is completed to specification.
  • Complete daily housekeeping and clean-up tasks at job sites, yards, and company facilities.
  • Support safety practices through job hazard analysis (JHA), site inspections, and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Assist with equipment and vehicle inspections, maintenance, and recordkeeping.
  • Participate in on-the-job and formal training programs, including classroom, online, and field instruction.
  • Conduct utility locate verifications and contribute to damage prevention efforts.
  • Pressure wash vehicles and equipment and perform general upkeep of tools and storage areas.
  • Deliver and retrieve materials, tools, and equipment as needed.
  • Read and understand basic equipment manuals and assist with technology (e.g., GPS or grade control systems).
  • Maintain a high standard of professionalism and customer service on all job sites.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support field operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • General experience on a construction site preferred.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting up to 80 lbs. and performing strenuous labor for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme heat, cold, and other challenging environments.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work in confined spaces, manholes, trenches, tunnels, and crawlspaces.
  • Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and Level 4 background check.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, safety, and adherence to company policies.
  • A customer-focused mindset with a strong work ethic and team-first attitude.
CERTIFICATIONS (PREFERRED)
  • OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30
  • Class A CDL
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Outdoor work in varied weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, etc.)
  • Exposure to noise, heavy equipment, and construction environments
  • Travel between multiple job sites as required.
  • Able to lift up to 80 lbs.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Climb ladders, enter trenches, vaults, manholes, and confined spaces.
