Job summary

Qualifications

  • Must pass a pre‑employment drug test as per policy

  • Completion of plumber/pipefitter apprenticeship or journeyman experience preferred
  • High pressure steam distribution knowledge is required
  • Ability to read plans and standards of construction

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance on water distribution, wastewater collection, and steam distribution systems.
  • Execute system shutdowns/turn-ons, hydrant flushing, and flow testing.
  • Conduct inspections of water, wastewater, and steam systems.
  • Use CMMS to create work orders and record labor, parts, and equipment usage.
  • Respond to emergencies to maintain system functionality and public safety.
  • Participate in Loss Prevention System initiatives.

Job description

The Utility Fitter is responsible for the safe and reliable operation, maintenance, and repair of a Level III water distribution system, Level III wastewater collection system, and decentralized medium and low-pressure steam distribution system. This role requires achieving and maintaining Level III certifications in water distribution and wastewater collection while performing preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on system components. The Utility Fitter operates specialized equipment including sewer jetting trucks, vacuum trucks, and other miscellaneous pipefitter tools, and conducts inspections and repairs in confined spaces under a variety of environmental conditions, including extreme cold and heat. The position also requires participation in on‑call rotation and the ability to respond promptly to emergency callouts to ensure continuous system functionality and public safety.

This is an in‑person position located at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska.

What you will do
  • Perform preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance on the water distribution, and wastewater collection, and steam distribution systems.
  • Perform operational duties on the water, wastewater, and steam distribution systems to include but not limited to system shutdowns and turn‑ons, hydrant flushing and flow testing, and water and wastewater sampling.
  • Perform inspections on the water, wastewater, and steam system distribution systems.
  • Utilize the computer maintenance management system to create work orders, and record work activities, labor, parts and equipment usage.
  • Respond to emerging issues on the water, wastewater, and steam distribution systems.
  • Participate in the Loss Prevention System.
Conditions of Employment

Must pass a pre‑employment drug test, random drug test thereafter in accordance with the published policy of Doyon Utilities. Must have a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska. Must be eligible to work on a military installation in Alaska. Eligibility to work on a military installation includes compliance with Department of Defense mandates with respect to employee background and health directives.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent Required
  • 4 years Experience working as an operator on a public water or wastewater system. Required or
  • 5 years Experience as a journeyman pipefitter or plumber. Required or
  • Successful completion of an accredited plumber/pipefitter apprenticeship program. Required
  • Intermediate Knowledge the operation and maintenance of high‑ and low‑pressure steam distribution systems and associated equipment.. (required proficiency)
  • Intermediate knowledge of the operation and maintenance of public water distribution systems and equipment, disinfection practices, and flow testing. (required proficiency)
  • Intermediate knowledge of the operation and maintenance of public wastewater gravity and forced main collection systems and their associated equipment, to include but not limited to lift stations and lift station controls. (required proficiency)
  • Ability to read and understand plans, specifications, and standards of construction. (preferred proficiency)
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate within a team. (required proficiency)
  • Ability to operate in a safe, and professional journeyman manner. (required proficiency)
  • Knowledge of computer maintenance systems (preferred proficiency)
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with other workers, supervisors and site management. (required proficiency)
  • Skills, knowledge, and ability to operate utility fitter tools, to include, but not limited tasks associated with to welding, cutting, grinding, threading, soldering, grooving, pumping, thawing, jetting and snaking. (preferred proficiency)
  • Knowledge skills and ability to operate utility fitter support equipment to include but not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, forklifts, skid steers, jetter trucks, boom trucks, camera trucks, and plow trucks. (preferred proficiency)
  • Intermediate knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and safe work practices that apply to the operations and maintenance of DU’s utility systems (required proficiency)
  • ADEC Provisional certifications (WD and WWC). Within 1 year of date of hire. Required
  • ADEC Level I certifications (WD and WWC). Within 2 years from date of hire. Required
  • ADECE Level II certifications (WD and WWC). Within 4 years of date of hire. Required
  • ADEC Level III certifications (WD and WWC). Within 6 years of date of hire. Required
  • Class B CDL License from the State of Alaska within 1 Year Required
