Job summary

Sigma Technologies is seeking a Utility Field Technician to collect information and document overhead power-distribution infrastructure across Central & Southern Alabama, including travel within the region. This field-based role requires independence, attention to detail, and ability to work outdoors year-round.

Ideal candidates may have prior utility or field data-collection experience. A reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license are needed; mileage reimbursement is provided.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in utilities, power distribution, telecommunications, construction, surveying, inspection, GIS, or field data collection preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation of field conditions.
  • Comfort using mobile devices, email, maps, and data-collection applications.
  • Ability to read maps and navigate rural or unfamiliar locations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys of overhead power-distribution facilities.
  • Locate, inspect, photograph, measure, and document utility poles, power lines, transformers, attachments, and related infrastructure.
  • Record pole conditions, equipment information, attachment details, clearances, and surrounding field conditions.
  • Use maps, mobile devices, GIS-based applications, and electronic data-collection tools to locate facilities and document information.
  • Upload accurate photographs, measurements, field notes, and other required project information.
  • Plan daily routes and manage assigned work efficiently across the designated field area.
  • Communicate with project management, engineering, and design teams regarding field conditions or missing information.
  • Follow all company, customer, traffic, and field-safety requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Utility Field Technician - Power Pole Data Collection

Location: Birmingham, AL

Primary Field Area: Central & Southern Alabama

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

Sigma Technologies is seeking a Utility Field Technician to collect information and document overhead power-distribution infrastructure throughout the designated service areas, and beyond as needed.

This is a field-based opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors, staying active, traveling throughout the region, and managing their work independently. Previous utility or field data-collection experience is preferred, but not required.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE APPLYING
  • Field assignments involve year-round outdoor work in heat, cold, rain, humidity, and direct sunlight.
  • The work requires driving and walking over hilly, steep, uneven, muddy, wooded, swampy, or otherwise difficult terrain.
  • A reliable personal vehicle is required, and mileage reimbursement is provided at the company-designated rate.
  • Assignments may require driving an hour or more, one way and staying overnight Monday through Thursday when necessary.
  • New hires must attend an initial two-week, in-person, paid orientation and training program at our headquarters in Perrysburg, Ohio.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO

Requirements

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in utilities, power distribution, telecommunications, construction, surveying, inspection, GIS, or field data collection is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work independently, manage daily assignments, and remain productive with limited direct supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately document field conditions.
  • Comfort using mobile devices, email, maps, electronic forms, and data-collection applications.
  • Ability to read maps, follow assigned routes, and navigate rural or unfamiliar locations.
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Reliable personal transportation, a valid driver’s license, and automobile insurance meeting Sigma's minimum requirements.
  • Ability to successfully complete required background, drug, and driving-record checks.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to drive and sit in a vehicle for extended periods while traveling between field locations.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, potentially five miles or more in a workday.
  • Ability to navigate steep, uneven, rocky, muddy, wooded, swampy, or otherwise difficult terrain on foot.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and balance equipment or other objects weighing up to approximately 40 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, reach, and maintain balance while collecting field information.
  • Ability to work safely near roadways, moving vehicles, utility infrastructure, vegetation, and other field hazards.
  • Ability to visually locate, inspect, photograph, and measure objects at varying distances.
