Job summary

The City of Punta Gorda in Florida seeks a professional Utilities Engineer to lead planning and design of water and wastewater public works projects. You will supervise projects during construction and act as liaison between developers, engineers and contractors, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

A Bachelor's in Engineering is required and a Florida PE or eligibility within six months. Candidates should be able to manage bid documents, GIS updates, and support city infrastructure

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering required.
  • Three (3) years of experience designing and managing municipal public works projects preferred.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Florida or able to obtain within six months of employment.

Normal Work Schedule

Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Additional hours, including weekends and holidays may be required.

Position Summary

A professional position responsible for Utilities Engineering and providing technical engineering services for City utilities construction and improvement projects.

Essential Functions and Duties
  • Planning and Design of utility capital projects.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the principles and theories of civil engineering, including hydrology, hydraulics, water and wastewater municipal utility design and operations.
  • Knowledge of geographic information system principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater utility design standards.
  • Knowledge of land development regulations.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations of water and wastewater utility design and operations.
  • Knowledge of local codes and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of the principles and theories of land surveying.

  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in the construction cost estimation of public works projects.
  • Skill in administering contracts for public works projects.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and prioritizing work.
  • Skill in performing mathematical computations and applying standard engineering techniques in the design and construction of public works projects.
  • Ability to organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate scientific civil engineering problems and provide practical, cost effective solutions.
  • Ability to keep abreast of changes in scientific knowledge and engineering technology and utilize such changes in solution of theoretical or practical civil engineering problems.
  • Ability to communicate orally in the English language with customers, co-workers, contractors and the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings, or using a telephone.
  • Ability to review or check the work products of others to ensure conformance to design and construction schedules.
  • Ability to produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper English sentence construction, punctuation and grammar.
  • Ability to use a personal computer, engineering applications, and data management software in performing duties.
Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications
  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering required.
  • Three (3) years of experience designing and managing projects, municipal public works projects preferred.
