The Utility Designer I position is responsible for directing, coordinating, and exercising functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of telephone, electric, and/or gas projects within the area of assigned responsibility.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Completes utility design projects by self or in conjunction with support staff.
- Completes detailed utility designs for telephone, electric and/or gas customers
- Collects field data
- Assembles drawings using AutoCAD
- Analyzes engineering sketches, specifications, and related data and drawings to produce final product
- Completes tabs and populates information in proprietary customer software.
- Completes permitting process with local authorities.
- Coordinates with construction crew for installation of facilities per the design.
- Coordinates with customers on all aspects of project.
- Reviews design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, client requirements, and related specifications.
- Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
- Controls expenditures and hours within limitations of project budget.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
- 10 year's minimum experience in utility industry, preferably design related. An understanding of construction methods and basic utility design is required.
- Bachelors or Associates degree in civil engineering or civil technology are useful, but not required.
- Must have working knowledge of AutoCAD.
- Ability to read and understand DOT road plan and profiles and cross-sections is required.
- Ability to manage numerous tasks/projects simultaneously.
- Ability to direct and work with other employees.
- Must be self-directed and work with minimal supervision.
- Effective technical writing and analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Ability to organize and prioritize daily work, including tracking and managing competing priorities.
- Ability to work effectively with all levels of management within the organization.
- Ability to handle confidential information.
- Knowledge of pole loading analysis programs is a plus but not required (i.e. O'Calc. or equivalent).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and Word.
- Position will work on projects primarily in the Southwest and Central Wisconsin areas.
