Job description

Position Overview

The Utility Designer 2 is responsible for planning, designing, verifying locations, inspecting, or otherwise capturing information related to utility and telecommunication assets. This junior-level role involves learning and applying technical skills under supervision, using routine procedures to address common challenges.

Job Duties

Responsibilities:

  1. Utilize software to analyze field data and maintain records of utility infrastructure.
  2. Identify and mitigate safety risks.
  3. Design aerial and underground utilities, ensuring compliance with standards including remedying National Electric Safety Code violations, performing pole loading analysis, and incorporating utility-specific standards and specifications.
  4. Optimize designs for cost-effectiveness and safety.
  5. Transfer designs across CAD and CU/MU platforms.
  6. Manage permitting processes and correct database errors.
  7. Collaborate with project stakeholders for optimal design solutions.
  8. Maintain vehicle and equipment, ensuring operational readiness.
  9. Manage document systems effectively.
  10. Respond to emergencies safely and promptly.
  11. Report to supervisors accurately and promptly.
  12. Participate in training events and travel occasionally for on-site duties.
  13. Perform other assigned duties and adhere to company policies.
Qualifications

Required:

  • High-school diploma with a minimum of 2 years electric utility or telecommunications industry experience OR a Bachelor's degree in engineering (or related technical field) with no prior industry experience.
  • Obtain and maintain professional certificates and licenses as required.
  • Proficiency in CAD/Outside Plant Engineering design software, PLA software, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and data entry.
  • Strong communication skills, including written and verbal, with the ability to read, comprehend, and produce professional correspondence.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic and carry out detailed instructions, resolving problems involving multiple variables.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field from an accredited institution.
  • 2-4 years of electric utility or telecommunications experience.
  • Electric hazard and equipment identification capabilities.
  • OSHA 1910.269 qualified training (training provided if needed).
