Mechanical Utility Engineer (P7-P9)
About the Position
The NSLS-II Mechanical Engineering Group seeks a Mechanical Utility Engineer to provide engineering support for the design, installation, and maintenance of the mechanical utility systems for the NSLS-II Accelerator Division. Systems include deionized water (DI), processed chilled water, hot water, compressed air, and HVAC.
Responsibilities
- Provide engineering support for all aspects of mechanical utility systems.
- Develop plans to start‑up, test, and verify that system performance meets facility needs.
- Oversee DI water, compressed air, and chilled water distribution systems to maintain designed performance criteria.
- Document, procure, and maintain spare part inventory.
- Develop and implement safety practices and procedures for daily activities.
- Design, oversee, and manage utility system installations, including labor, material, and schedule estimates.
- Prepare Statements of Work and specifications for mechanical installations to be bid.
- Oversee design, procurement, fabrication, and commissioning of mechanical installations.
- Create P&ID drawings for new and existing mechanical installations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.
- Minimum seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in a related engineering field.
- Strong knowledge of hot water and chilled water hydronic systems, HVAC, and compressed air distribution.
- Ability to perform design responsibilities from conception to completion.
- Experience with energy‑load calculations.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD 2D & 3D modeling or similar for equipment, duct, and piping layout.
- Experience developing a comprehensive maintenance program for mechanical utility systems.
- Effective interpersonal skills for interacting with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff.
- Strong technical writing skills and experience with spreadsheets.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ten (10) or more years of progressively responsible experience demonstrating advanced capabilities and sophisticated engineering approaches.
- Experience with Revit 3D design software.
- Master’s degree or Professional Engineer license.
- Knowledge of Allen‑Bradley or automated logic control systems.
- Experience working with large facilities.
Employment Conditions
- Office work with required hearing, speaking, and color vision; ability to walk, climb stairs, and ladders up to 30 ft.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds; continuous walking/standing required.
- Occasional off‑hours, nights, and weekends to support mission‑critical projects.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE UPIV credential and comply with REAL‑ID requirements for access.
Salary and Benefits
Full salary range: $113,050.00 – $163,617.00 per year. Benefits include a comprehensive employee benefits program.
