Job summary

City of Bloomington Utilities seeks a Maintenance Mechanic to keep its facilities running smoothly across treatment plants, storage tanks, lift stations and booster stations. You will perform routine and preventative maintenance, diagnose electrical/mechanical issues, and respond to emergencies in all weather conditions.

You will also inspect equipment, conduct tests, and perform light wiring tasks while adhering to safety protocols.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent or a combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of wastewater lift stations and water booster station systems preferred.
• Ability to perform emergency and routine inspections of equipment and machinery.
• Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures.
• Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.
• CDL with air brake endorsement or permit; if not held, must obtain within 120 days.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine and preventative maintenance to booster and lift stations to ensure proper functioning of systems and equipment.
• Performs all major and minor overhaul and repair of pumps, equipment and machinery, including diagnostic testing as needed.
• Performs preventative maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery, including oil changes, greasing, Omni alarm system operations, chlorine tank changes, and valve/pump checks.
• Mows grass and weeds, removes trees and brush, and performs other grounds keeping duties of a seasonal nature, including snow and ice removal.
• Evaluates equipment electrical problems; performs light wiring repairs and replacements.
• Performs die and smoke testing to verify proper operation and identifies fault locations.
• Conducts inspections and responds to emergency service as needed.
• Performs general housekeeping/janitorial duties as needed.
• Incumbent spends ~70% of time on lift and booster station duties; inspects and maintains systems and addresses external inquiries about city infrastructure as needed.

• Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.
• Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement or permit required. If the incumbent holds a permit, they must be able to get Class B with airbrake CDL within the first 120 days of employment. Current Class A or B CDL, preferred.

Difficulty of Work

Incumbent frequently lifts vehicle components and equipment of moderate to heavy weight and often works in awkward and/or cramped conditions, performing many functions in a prone, stooping, or crouched position. Prolonged, intense physical strain is not associated with normal operations. Incumbent needs the ability to work overtime as directed. Required to be on call every four weeks.

Incumbent performs most duties out of doors, in varying weather conditions, but the majority of duties are performed at booster and lift stations. The incumbent is frequently exposed to excessive noise, grease, dirt, poisonous gases and fumes. Safety precautions must be observed at all times to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.

The maintenance mechanic has a main responsibility with ensuring the proper operations of lift and booster stations, with nearly 70% of their time being spent on these duties. Lift stations are wastewater, and boosters are the clean water pumps. At times the mechanics will work with the public and other city departments to resolve disputes regarding sewage and water usage, along with determining any fault to the city in cases which repairs are needed for private homeowners that are the result of city error.
