Job summary

Stafford County, VA is seeking a Water and Sewer Line Worker to install, repair, and maintain potable water and sewer lines and appurtenances under supervision. The role supports line maintenance, tapping, and service connections, with hands-on training and a formal career ladder.

Level I–III provide growth opportunities as experience increases; a CDL is required for Level II, and flagging certification for Level III. All levels require a Virginia commercial driver's license.

Qualifications

Job description

Performs responsible semiskilled and skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines and appurtenances. Does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

The hiring range for the position is from $23.60/hour to $34.74/hour based on experience.

This position is part of a career ladder which allows for advancement with experience and growth.

  • Line Worker I - $23.60/hour to $41.30/hour
  • Line Worker II - $25.26/hour to $44.21/hour
  • Line Worker III - $27.03/hour to $47.31/hour

Installing, maintaining, and repairing water and sewer lines, wells, pump stations, and appurtenances; operating equipment; making service connections.

  • Operates flushing, cleaning and line inspection equipment;
  • Makes water and sewer taps and service connections;
  • Repairs and replaces water and sewer lines and related facilities;
  • Unstops lines with rodding machine; repairs and flushes fire hydrants;
  • Operates trucks, tractors, back hoe, air hammer, tapping machine and other mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks;
  • Performs general grounds maintenance tasks; excavates and backfills trenches;
  • Installs water meters, fire hydrants, and valves;
  • Performs minor landscaping and asphalt work after work is completed;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
  • General knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of utility lines;
  • General knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of utility lines and appurtenances;
  • Thorough knowledge in the use of common hand and power tools;
  • Ability to operate back hoe and other medium construction equipment;
  • Ability to perform manual and semiskilled labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Level I: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and less than 1 year of experience in the maintenance, repair, and/or construction of water and sewer.

Level II: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 2 years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and/or construction of water and sewer. A CDL is required for a level II.

Level III: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 4 years of experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of water and sewer. Possession of flagging certification from VDOT is required for level III.

All levels require possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
