Job summary

Lonza in Portsmouth, NH, on-site, seeks an Utilities HVAC Engineer II to design and oversee primary plant HVACR and utility systems for biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

The role focuses on supporting facilities, CAPEX planning, and cross-functional collaboration to enhance system reliability and GMP compliance. A Bachelor’s in engineering with 2–5 years of experience is required.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with GMP compliance and EHS safety procedures.
  • Ability to analyze and guide engineering for industrial HVAC/MEP systems.
  • Read and interpret complex MEP/HVAC drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee, design, and support ownership of primary plant HVACR and utility systems.
  • Develop technical knowledge on Utilities and HVAC equipment and processes.
  • Support maintenance teams with lifecycle, reliability, and major breakdown resolution.
  • Assist CAPEX planning including scoping, cost estimation, and vendor communication.
  • Coordinate testing, startup, and change requests to meet GMP standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve capacity and standards.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and ensure regulatory compliance.

Utilities HVAC Engineer II

Location: On-site: Portsmouth, NH.

The Utilities HVAC Engineer role supports Lonza operations by ensuring that plant systems, equipment and facilities are designed and operating to meet the requirements for biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Support facilities/maintenance operations, system design engineering oversight, building automation systems, CAPEX planning, development and execution.

What You Will Do
  • Apply engineering principles to oversee, design, and support ownership of primary plant HVACR and Utility systems, supporting operational decision-making.
  • Develop technical knowledge on Utilities and HVAC equipment and processes.
  • Support plant maintenance teams by focusing on system lifecycle, reliability, and resolving major equipment breakdowns.
  • Support CAPEX project planning, including scoping, cost estimation, and vendor communication for infrastructure upgrades.
  • Coordinate FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), startup, and change requests to ensure project completion meets GMP compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve system capacity, support technical standards development, and prioritize departmental projects.
  • Maintain a safe work environment, adhere to training requirements, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
What We Are Looking For
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering (or related field) with 2-5 years of experience in an engineering/manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) compliance, EHS safety procedures, and Building Automation/HVAC systems.
  • Ability to perform technical analysis, develop system-level design criteria, and provide operational guidance for industrial, preferably pharmaceutical, systems.
  • The ability to learn to read complex MEP/HVAC drawings.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse, cross-functional teams, coordinate technical execution teams, and guide professional engineering consultants.
  • Strong logical thinking skills with the ability to solve complex problems and adapt to shifting priorities, timelines, and demands in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong oral/written communication skills.
