Job summary

Lonza in Portsmouth, NH is seeking a Controls Engineer, Level 3, to sustain and improve manufacturing automation. You will design, program, and troubleshoot instrumentation and automation systems to meet production needs.

The role requires a Bachelor's in engineering or CS with 5–10 years of experience, strong PLC/HMI skills (DeltaV, AB, Siemens), SCADA and OSI PI experience, and a solid grounding in cGMP. On-site, collaborative environment, and growth opportunities are provided.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or computer science; STEM degree strongly preferred.
• 5–10 years of related work experience.
• Strong PLC programming proficiency (Emerson DeltaV, AB, Siemens).
• Experience with SCADA, data historians (OSI PI), and industrial protocols.
• Solid understanding of cGMP regulations and GAMP 5 guidelines.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot complex automation systems and perform root cause analysis.

• Initiate/change controls and participate in the change control process.

Controls Engineer, Level 3

Location: 100% on-site. Portsmouth, NH.

The Controls Engineer supports ongoing Lonza operations through technical assistance as it relates to the manufacturing and process automation systems. Provides a technical resource to operations customers to ensure that instrumentation and automation systems are designed and operating to meet production needs.

Develop technical knowledge on manufacturing equipment and processes automation systems.

Support resolution of equipment breakdowns and quality issues in the suites.

Conduct troubleshooting and technical analyses on manufacturing equipment and processes automation systems including PI data analyses, review/troubleshooting code, etc.

Assist with tech transfer, projects and process improvements as needed.

Perform all work safely and meet the requisite training requirements.

Initiates change controls and participates in all aspects of the change controls process.

Complete change request lot assessments to support lot release.

What we are looking for:

Bachelor’s Degree is required (Engineering or Computer Science Strongly preferred; STEM degree is required).

5-10 years of related work experience.

Strong proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Emerson DeltaV, Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley), Siemens) and HMI development (e.g., FactoryTalk View, Wonderware).

Experience with SCADA systems, data historians (e.g., OSI PI), and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Modbus).Solid understanding of cGMP regulations and GAMP 5 guidelines.

Proven ability to troubleshoot complex automation systems and perform root cause analysis.

Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
