Job summary

The City of Chandler is seeking a Utilities Engineering Manager - Principal Engineer (PE) to lead water and wastewater projects within the Public Works & Utilities Department. This salaried role follows a 5-day work week from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and requires Arizona PE licensure with extensive project leadership experience.

Responsibilities include long-range planning, capital budget development, and coordinating with various city departments and regulatory agencies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering field required.
• 8 years of experience as a registered engineer in water and wastewater utility design, construction, and optimization, with at least 2 years of supervisory experience.
• Arizona Professional Engineer licensure required; valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Support the Public Works & Utilities Director and Assistant Directors with long-range planning and capital budget development.
• Perform complex engineering analyses and coordinate capital projects with city departments and external stakeholders.
• Apply professional engineering principles across water resources, planning, development, design, construction, and asset management.
• Supervise daily operations of assigned staff, including professional, technical, and clerical personnel.

This role offers a salary near the top of the pay range, depending on experience. This salaried position is scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Current City of Chandler employees may only hold one position and are not eligible for additional part-time or secondary positions within the City of Chandler.

Who we are

The Utilities Administration Division of the Public Works & Utilities Department is one of six American Public Works Association (APWA) Accredited agencies in the State. This division is responsible for providing management direction in planning, developing, operating, constructing, and maintaining water, wastewater, and solid waste public infrastructure, which is accomplished by working with city staff, elected officials, and the public.

Who we are looking for

Our new team member will be passionate about customer service, teamwork, and collaboration. We are looking for someone to support the Public Works & Utilities Director and Assistant Directors with long-range planning, capital budget development, complex engineering analyses, facilitate coordination with city departments on capital projects as well as public infrastructure that are impacted by private developments. Additionally, this person will be expected to apply a full range of professional engineering principles and practices in water resources, planning, development, programming, design, construction, asset management principles and implementation. Our new team member will work side by side with various city operations and maintenance teams, interface with regulatory agencies, other governmental stakeholders, as well as city residents and utility customers. Additionally, this person will supervise the daily operations of assigned staff, which may include professional, technical, and clerical personnel. This classification is distinguished from other engineering work by the requirement for an Arizona Licensed Professional Engineer designation.

Minimum Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in an Engineering field; and
• 8 years of experience as a registered engineer in water and wastewater utility design, construction, unit process control and optimization, including at least two (2) years of previous supervisory experience; and
• An Arizona Professional Engineer Licensure; and
• A valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Desired Qualifications

• Multifaceted experience with a specific focus in water and wastewater project management.

This is a regular full-time position, subject to a 6-month probationary period. A register of qualified candidates will be active for 4 months should another position become available.
