RED-Rochester is a multi-utility plant and district energy supplier to one of the world’s most comprehensive industrial parks: the Eastman Business Park. Supporting a 1,200-acre campus, RED-Rochester owns and operates the utilities, infrastructure, technical services, support services, space, and regional resources to benefit various industry sectors. RED-Rochester is seeking a Utilities Engineer for Electrical Systems and Power Distribution. This key role provides technical guidance for the operation, maintenance, and expansion of the Eastman Business Park microgrid in Rochester, New York, serving as the senior technical resource for electrical and power distribution systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain a strategic master plan for the electrical distribution system, including operations, maintenance, hardening, and expansion to accommodate new loads and increased electrification.
- Lead technical efforts related to medium voltage (600V to 34.5KV) distribution equipment, substations, transformers, switchgear, cables, motors, and turbines.
- Provide support for low voltage (110V to 600V) distribution equipment, variable frequency drives, and motors.
- Conduct power systems analysis including load flow, voltage drop, short circuit, protection, and arc flash studies, utilizing SKM Power Tools for Windows. Also, perform power quality analysis as needed.
- Manage projects and support electrical engineering needs for both RED-originated and customer-driven projects, overseeing contractors and engineers.
- Assist in the daily operations and maintenance of RED-Rochester's low and medium voltage systems.
- Coordinate NYISO generator modeling and respond to NYISO technical requests for market participation as a Behind the Meter Net Generator.
- Interface with the local utility for operational coordination and utility interconnect modifications.
- Provide electrical engineering support to all RED departments for building systems such as HVAC, power, lighting, IT cabling, security, fire alarms, and UPS.
- Guide RED’s EHS group on electrical safety compliance with NFPA standards.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Experience in manufacturing/industrial sites, power systems, utility interconnects, and business development.
- 7-10 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering, utilities, power plant design, cogeneration, and energy-intensive processes.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in engineering, construction, and design of power plants and energy systems.
- Proficiency in MS Office.
- Expected to hold a New York State PE License.
Certifications/Licenses:
- New York State PE License (required).
Skills/Competencies:
- Experience managing capital projects and maintenance projects.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to coordinate with engineers, contractors, and vendors.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Bluebeam Revu, Navisworks, AutoDesk/AutoCAD, Maximo, and SKM analysis software.
- Deep technical knowledge of low and medium voltage systems and metering.
- Strategic thinking and results-driven attitude.
- Strong problem-solving skills and data analysis capabilities.
- Commitment to high standards of service reliability and customer satisfaction.
- Willingness to work overtime and respond to emergency calls.
