Job summary

City of Montrose is hiring a heavy laborer for water distribution and wastewater collection system maintenance. You will operate major equipment (loader, backhoe, sewer rodders, sewer jet), excavate and repair water and sewer lines, and assist with meter work and line locating.

The role requires reading maps/blueprints, following safety protocols, and participating in on-call rotations. Non-standard hours including nights, weekends, and holidays apply.

Responsibilities

• Excavate, install and repair wastewater mains and laterals; tap sanitary sewer services.
• Operate and maintain sewer collection equipment (Vactor, camera truck); analyze data and generate reports.
• Record data using computer/log books; maintain maintenance records.
• Assist in training and support, participate in on-call rotation and after-hours emergencies.
• Adhere to safety protocols and wear PPE; report unsafe conditions.
• Assist other City Departments as needed.

Basic Purpose Of The Job

Under general direction, performs heavy manual labor and equipment operation for the repair, maintenance and installation of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Maintains a safe work environment.

Essential functions

(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

• Perform heavy manual labor and equipment operation including loaders, backhoes, sewer rodders, sewer jet and other equipment associated with the repair, maintenance and installation of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
• Install, maintain and repair water distribution mains, laterals, valves, valve boxes, meter pits, meters, hydrants and pressure reducing valves. Locate water lines for excavation. Perform meter reading as needed.
• Excavate, install, inspect, flush, clean and repair wastewater mains, lines and laterals. Make taps for sanitary sewer services and locate sewer mains for excavation contractors. Repair, test and maintain sewer lift stations and residential grinder pump systems.
• Operate and maintain sewer collection system equipment such as the Vactor and camera truck as assigned. Analyze the information and compile reports using associated computer software.
• Record pertinent data utilizing a computer or log book, maintenance records, bench sheets, etc.
• Assist in training while offering support and modeling high performance behavior for new teammates and seasonal workers as assigned.
• Actively participate in on-call rotation and response to after hours emergencies calls.
• Learn and adhere to all safety protocols. Operate in a safe manner at all times including operation of vehicles and equipment. Wear and utilize appropriate PPE at all times. Promptly report unsafe conditions, equipment or operations to a supervisor.
• Assist and participate in performing tasks within other City Departments as needed or assigned.

Job Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Experience performing maintenance, public works operations, or construction work in the assigned area of responsibility.
• Working knowledge of water distribution systems, sanitary sewer collection systems, and maintenance of those infrastructures.
• Ability to read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.
• Knowledge of standard construction practices relating to water systems and waste water collection preferred.
• This position is subject to non-standard working hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Licensures & Certificates (must be active and current.)

• Current Colorado Class A or B Commercial Driver’s license with Tanker and Airbrake endorsements preferred; must be able to obtain within 90 days of start date; must have acceptable driving record.
• Traffic control Flagger certification.
• Entry - Ability to obtain CCWP Level 1 certification in area of primary responsibility within two (2) years.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Requires ability to perform heavy manual labor. Strenuous physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds; frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing, hand/eye coordination. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of personal computer, and use of hands to handle small parts; vision for reading and preparing written reports and documents; frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communications with employees and citizens. Requires driving and walking during inclement weather. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
