Qualifications

Responsibilities

Position Title: User Interface User Experience Designer

The UI/UX Designer is a Key Personnel position responsible for the end-to-end user experience design of the Modernization application. This role ensures that the system is intuitive, accessible, and aligned with the real-world workflows of arson and explosives investigators across federal, state, and local agencies.

Location: Huntsville, AL

Clearance: Public Trust Background Investigation

Key Responsibilities

• Develop detailed user personas representing the diverse roles within the user community (investigators, supervisors, tracing specialists, canine handlers, administrators, etc.).
• Produce high-fidelity wireframes and prototypes in Adobe XD prior to development work on each applicable user story, conforming to the SPARTAN UI & UX Style Guide (Attachment 9).
• Evaluate all user-facing designs against recognized usability heuristics including consistency, error prevention, visibility of system status, feedback, and minimalist design.
• Conduct lightweight, frequent usability testing with representative users or proxies, ensuring 75% of user-facing features are tested before completion.
• Maintain a Usability Findings Log documenting observations, issues identified, and resolution status, with 90% of issues resolved prior to release.
• Ensure all designs achieve 100% Section 508 compliance (keyboard navigation, screen reader support, color contrast, and other WCAG standards).
• Collaborate closely with developers to implement responsive, browser- and device-agnostic designs (desktop, mobile, tablet).
• Provide UI/UX Metrics each sprint, including task success rates and user feedback trends, targeting >85% task success in validation activities.
• Ensure all user-facing stories in Digital.ai are associated with a clearly defined user role or persona (95% compliance).
• Travel to USBDC and other field locations as needed to conduct in-person user research and gather real-world feedback.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Graphic Design, Information Systems, or related field; equivalent experience accepted.
• 3+ years of UI/UX design experience for complex web applications.
• Proficiency in Adobe XD for wireframing and high-fidelity prototype creation.
• Demonstrated experience designing accessible interfaces in compliance with Section 508 / WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating user-centered design work for data-heavy or enterprise applications.
• Experience conducting usability testing and synthesizing findings into actionable design improvements.
• Ability to obtain and maintain an ATF background investigation (Public Trust).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience designing for federal law enforcement, case management, or incident reporting systems.
• Familiarity with responsive design principles and device-agnostic design approaches.
• Experience working within an Agile SCRUM team and integrating design into sprint workflows.
• Knowledge of component library-based design systems.
• Experience with GIS/map-based interfaces or data visualization design.
