Position Summary

(USA) Director, UX Design – Enterprise Design Systems

About the Team

Join our award-winning design team and help us shape the future of retail. Our mission is to bring dignity and access through design excellence to all, regardless of zip code or bank account. We design high-value experiences that improve the daily lives of millions of customers – whether they are at home, in our stores, or on the go. We also craft world-class tools and services that enable our more than 1 million in-store and supply chain associates to deliver great value to our customers every day.

This leadership role will lead a team bringing our strategic vision to life, and is based in Bentonville, Arkansas where we are expanding our awesome design community in our new, state-of-the-art campus.

As the UX Director, Enterprise Design Systems, you will lead the evolution of Walmart’s enterprise design system for the AI age, through highly strategic and craft-based design leadership, at the scale and speed of Walmart retail. Leveraging generative AI tooling, design-to-code automation, and robust design systems governance models, you will champion enterprise-wide adoption and adherence to Walmart's design standards, enabling everyone at Walmart (designers, engineers, writers, etc. across Walmart US, Sam’s Club, and international markets) to deliver consumer-grade digital experiences, consistently and efficiently.

By innovating on the world’s biggest stage, you will have the chance to shape both the future of retail and of design in the region. If you are motivated by complex, purposeful challenges, being UX Director, Enterprise Design Systems at Walmart could be the fit you’ve been looking for.

You’ll sweep us off our feet if you have...

  • Ability to define and advocate for an enterprise-wide design systems vision
  • Track record of shipping and managing complex design systems, in a fast-moving and changing enterprise – one that celebrates experimentation, iteration, and shipping at scale
  • Built and managed multi-disciplinary teams of designers, researchers, writers, and front-end developers, while creating a strong design systems culture
  • A strong strategic mindset and a systems thinking approach
  • Adept with modern design systems tooling and automation
  • Engagement deeply in the details of the work, while inspiring and empowering designers to deliver beautiful, thoughtful solutions for our end users
  • Hands-on implementor with a strong desire for physical-digital prototyping and iteration
  • Comfort with resourcefully solving problems in dynamic situations
  • Experience leading product design process and building strong cross-functional partnerships
  • Excellent visual and interaction design skills and a keen understanding of trends in the market
  • A skilled change maker who is not afraid to think big and challenge the status quo
  • An understanding of data and analytics to track performance
  • A high bar for quality, and can set new standards for design delivery
  • Ability to communicate concepts in a clear and compelling way to audiences of all levels of understanding and levels of seniority
  • Ability to produce great work in short timeframes, multitask across different projects and platforms and adapt to the ever-changing priorities of the business
  • Deep experience with business requirement gathering, end-to-journey mapping, facilitating sessions like Design Sprints, conducting competitive analysis, and leading rapid concepting and prototyping
  • Champion of a design philosophy that is inclusive of all people
  • Strong ability to leverage the best experiences to engage the design community in and outside Walmart, and a thoughtful planning approach to resourcefully and creatively build community

You’ll make an impact by:

  • Driving the design strategy and delivering on the future vision
  • Partnering with the business, engineering, and product partners to create a compelling vision that will inform the roadmap for our associate products and services
  • Owning and delivering all phases of product design work across the portfolio (these include defining the north star, distilling research, design ideation, prototyping, final spec design, implementation)
  • Leading your team in a way that nurtures the unique strengths of each member and brings them together in a way that has multiplying effect
  • Facilitating creative problem-solving across cross-functional partners to drive best-in-class thinking from all parts of the organization and seamlessly integrating competitive organizational goals
  • Driving and holding others accountable to create experiences that celebrate and empower our end users
  • Proactively soliciting, leveraging, and sharing design research, competitive research, data, and analytics to create full-featured and strategic products
  • Fostering a maker mindset so teams can iterate and experiment collaboratively to challenge the status quo, drive new thinking, and improve processes for creating future-forward product experiences
  • Thinking holistically so that we build true end-to-end experiences
  • Seamlessly switching gears from deep design thinking to rapid-fire execution
