Job summary

Akron Children’s in Beachwood, OH is seeking an Urgent Care Technician to provide patient care under the direction of a licensed Nurse or Physician. The role includes wound care, phlebotomy, vital signs, vaccines, and assisting with education and discharge planning.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of a state approved Medical Assistant Program, EMT, Paramedic Program, or Military Training is required.
  • BLS certification from American Heart Association required.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant healthcare experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • The Urgent Care Technician interfaces with patients and families under the direction of a licensed Nurse or Physician.
  • Prioritize and execute tasks for assigned patients in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Provides wound care and suturing of non-complex injuries as delegated and supervised by the attending Physician.
  • Obtains and records vital signs and documents accurately in the online charting software.
  • Performs phlebotomy in compliance with CLIA regulations.
  • Obtains lab specimens via nasopharyngeal swab, phlebotomy, and other indicated methods.
  • Administers vaccines and medications as directed by the physician.
  • Reports changes in patient condition to the licensed Nurse or Physician.
  • Maintains the clinical areas, stocks supplies, and keeps the facility organized.
  • Assists with patient education and discharge planning as needed.

Summary

The Urgent Care Technician provides care to patients as delegated by and under the direction of either a licensed Nurse or Physician. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the physical, psychological, social, educational, and safety needs of patients serviced, regardless of age.

Responsibilities
  • The Urgent Care Technician interfaces with patients and families and provides quality care under the direction of a licensed Nurse or Physician.
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks for the assigned patients in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Provides wound care and suturing of non-complex and orthopedic injuries as delegated and supervised by the attending Physician including but not limited to simple suturing, wound cleansing, suture removal, burn wound cleansing, debridement and dressing superficial subcutaneous foreign body removal and treatments.
  • Obtains and records vital signs of patients, including by not limited to height, weight, head circumference, vision screening. Accurately documents vital signs in the on-line charting software.
  • Performs phlebotomy maintaining compliance with CLIA Quality Control regulations.
  • Obtains lab specimens via nasopharyngeal swab, phlebotomy, and other methods as indicated by test orders.
  • Administers vaccines and medications, including antibiotics, as directed by the physician according to policy and procedure.
  • Reports changes in patient condition to the licensed Nurse or Physician.
  • Maintains the clinical and exam areas in preparation for patients and at the completion of the day. Stocks cupboards and ensures facility is organized and clean.
  • Answers basic health questions from patients/parents using approved guidelines.
  • Assists in the provision of patient and family education, including discharge planning needs according to established policies and procedures.
  • May assist with filing and appointment scheduling as needed and as time permits.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of the Urgent Care team and interact with people (patients and other staff members) in a friendly, supportive manner, at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Technical Expertise
  • Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology is required.
  • Experience working in a healthcare environment is preferred.
  • Basic communication skills (verbal and written) coupled with good interpersonal, organizational and critical thinking skills are required.
  • Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
  • Experience working in electronic charting software (e.g. EPIC) or similar software is preferred.
Education And Experience
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification: Completion of state approved Medical Assistant Program, EMT, Paramedical Program or Military Training is required.
  • Certification: Basic Life Saving (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Years of relevant experience: Minimum of two (2) years is preferred.
  • Years of experience supervising: None.
