Job description

Role Summary

URBN is hiring a Lead Data Scientist to join the Data Science Organization. This team is responsible for building, deploying, and maintaining Machine Learning systems to support the URBN brands. Our expertise spans project management, machine learning, software engineering, data engineering, and analytics. Unlike most Data Science organizations, our team is a full-service Machine Learning solution provider, taking projects from ideation and requirements through deployment of production services. We work closely with the Engineering teams on a wide range of projects including personalization and search, demand forecasting, and supply chain optimization.

The Lead Data Scientist role demands a deep understanding of data science and machine learning best practices, along with the ability to deliver ML models to deploy into production systems. This individual will play a critical role in leading technical projects, mentoring team members, and collaborating with stakeholders across the organization.

Role Responsibilities
  • Independently create, implement, and manage machine learning models to address various business needs.
  • Guide and mentor less experienced team members while making individual technical contributions.
  • Demonstrate strong expertise in designing and executing A/B tests, analyzing experiments, and troubleshooting ML model behavior.
  • Translate complex business requirements into effective and scalable data science solutions.
  • Collaborate within the data science organization and communicate across multiple functional/technical areas.
  • Effectively manage timelines and deliverables for multiple technical projects.
Role Qualifications
  • 7 years job experience developing ML solutions.
  • In-depth understanding of the state-of-the-industry data science and machine learning best practices.
  • Expert Python experience; strong SQL experience.
  • Mastery of tools for debugging and diagnosing ML models (e.g., MLflow).
  • Strong with ML tools (e.g., scikit-learn, Jupyter Notebooks, TensorFlow, PyTorch, LLMs).
  • Expert understanding of fundamental Machine Learning concepts (train/dev/test sets, overfitting, scoring metrics).
  • Ability to lead and mentor junior data scientists.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with Cloud platforms (Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, or Microsoft Azure, etc.) is preferred.
  • Experience with Cloud infrastructure (Virtual Machines, Cloud Storage, IAM, etc.) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD practices is preferred.
  • Data or ML orchestration frameworks (KubeFlow, MLflow, Airflow, etc.) is preferred.
  • Experience in tech organizations within e-commerce, fashion, or adjacent industries is preferred.
  • Masters or PhD degree in Computer Science, Analytics, Data Science, Mathematics or related field or equivalent job experience.
