Job description

Job Title: Upper School Math and Science Teacher (7th to 10th grade)

Location: Ascent Classical Academy of Grand Junction (ACAGJ)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Dean of Upper School

Work Hours/Days: Monday through Friday, Typical School day 7:00 am-3:30 pm, professional development and work days.

Compensation Range: $45,500 to $55,000 depending on degrees and years of experience

Desired Start Date: *August 2025

*Teachers must attend training in Hillsdale, MI, for up to 10 days in June. ACACS and Hillsdale cover travel to the conference, lodging, and food.

Position Summary:

We seek teachers with high standards of excellence, a professional demeanor, warm rapport, clear communication with parents, and a can-do attitude to join our team. Position includes teaching 7th-10th grade math and science classes for a total of 5 sections. This position may include a course load of mathematics up through Algebra II as well as Life Sciences, Physical Science, and Chemistry. You may be asked to provide coverage for other teachers as needed. We follow Hillsdale College's program for curriculum. The ideal candidate will be organized and devoted to helping students grow in wisdom and virtue.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare unit and lesson plans for all courses in alignment with Hillsdale College's K12 Program Guide for each school year
  • Teach and mentor students, utilizing classical pedagogy methods
  • Assign, collect, grade and return graded work in a timely manner
  • Supervise tests on the annual testing cycle (beginning of year, middle of year, end of year)
  • Identify struggling or advanced students to provide additional support or academic extensions
  • Collaborate with Students Services team to meet requirements of special educational plans, such as IEPs, 504s, and others
  • Communicate regularly, usually weekly, with parents
  • Assist in operations of the school (e.g., taking attendance, supervising student arrivals, passing periods in hallways, lunchtime and recess supervision, subbing for other teaches during non-class times) on a shared schedule
  • Maintain confidentiality in student records
  • Demonstrate consistent and reliable attendance by adhering to assigned work hours, reporting on time, and following proper procedures for absences or tardiness to ensure minimal disruption to students, colleagues, and school operations.
  • Perform other related duties as directed

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree and passing score on State Praxis in the subject area required
  • Teachers with a bachelor's degree in the subject taught are preferred, or a minimum of 36 hours of higher education credit in the subject area of instruction. (In some cases, a passing grade in a content exam will suffice.)
  • Ability to teach upper level mathematics and science, such as Algebra II and Chemistry.
  • All faculty will be required to participate in a study of Tried and True by Daniel Copeland and The Abolition of Man by C.S. Lewis
  • Strong background in relevant content areas with a willingness to receive specific training
  • Commitment to the policies, mission, and vision of ACACS
  • Conviction in the values of a rigorous liberal arts education
  • Commitment to model moral character in line with the school's core virtues
  • Proficiency in techniques to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities
