Job summary

Francis Parker School in San Diego seeks an Upper School Learning Specialist to support 9–12 grade students with identified learning differences through targeted literacy and instructional interventions. The role partners with teachers, parents, and outside professionals to promote academic progress and emotional growth.

The specialist will develop individualized learning profiles, monitor outcomes, and help students meet grade-level standards while collaborating with the Head of Student Success

Qualifications

  • Has significant experience within a thriving Learning Specialist Program and/or experience building a Learning Specialist program.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher; Master’s degree preferred; Professional Teacher Certification (including special education).
  • Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience with a literacy focus.
  • Extensive coursework/experience in special education or educational therapy.
  • Knowledge of intervention strategies, differentiated instruction, and data-driven teaching.
  • Experience interpreting psychoeducational evaluations and translating results into accommodations/interventions.
  • Experience working with High School students (9–12).
  • Knowledge of relevant technology; Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to implement formal and informal assessment programs.
  • Multicultural curriculum development and culturally responsive teaching experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and cultural competency skills.
  • High standards and expectations for students.
  • Commitment to being a positive, contributing member of the professional community.
  • Love of children and a passion for secondary education.
  • Extraordinary communication and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides small-group or one-on-one instruction to students performing below expectations in reading comprehension, written expression, and other literacy skills.
  • Uses diagnostic and formative assessments to identify learning needs, inform instruction, monitor progress and adjust intervention strategies.
  • Differentiates instruction as needed (content, process, product, environment).
  • Creates individualized learning profiles for students requiring specialized instructional support.
  • Delivers targeted interventions aligned with student learning profiles and standards.
  • Serves as case manager and coordinates learning profiles with teachers and counselors.
  • Holds annual progress meetings for students with LPs.
  • Collaborates with faculty to adjust and enrich curricular approaches and pedagogy.
  • Maintains regular communication with parents about progress and needs.
  • Co-facilitates Student Support Team meetings and determines additional support.
  • Communicates student progress with the Student Success Team and advisors.
  • Provides support to students with concussions or extended absences.
  • Coordinates scheduling for observations/evaluations with outside providers.
