Ravenscroft is an independent, coeducational day school in Raleigh, NC, with approximately 1,250 students in grades PreK-12.

We are actively looking to welcome an Upper School English teacher to join our community of educators who actively strive to be diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Our candidates should demonstrate empathy, knowledge, and an understanding of the diverse backgrounds in our community; place an importance on genuine and authentic connections with students, faculty, staff, and parents; be able to work collaboratively with team members of diverse backgrounds; and have the capacity to model an attitude of curiosity and a growth mindset.

Reports to: Head of Upper School

The successful candidate will be an educator who displays passion for teaching high school English and literature; other responsibilities and competencies include:

  • Teaching 5 sections of English literature and/or composition. Specific teaching assignments will depend on our needs and the qualifications of a successful candidate. Teachers typically teach 2-3 different courses.
  • Demonstrating cultural competence and the ability to connect with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and parents.
  • Exhibiting superior teaching skills that demonstrate best practices, including inquiry-based learning, differentiated instruction, and facilitation.
  • Advising approximately 12 students and facilitating the integration of our “Lead from Here” curriculum.
  • Designing and delivering lessons that are supportive of Ravenscroft’s mission to “nurture individual potential and prepare students to thrive in a complex and interdependent world.”
  • Understanding the development of Upper School students and displaying a passion for working with this age group.
  • Connecting with students, challenging them, and shifting pedagogical practice to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Demonstrating effective technology skills, including the ability to use our learning management systems (including, but not limited to, Canvas and Veracross).
  • Experience supporting social emotional learning inside and outside of the classroom; an eagerness and ability to support our Lead From Here curriculum.
  • Participating in other aspects of the School community as desired by the candidate (i.e., athletics, committees, etc.). The ability and willingness to coach a sport is strongly desired.
  • Demonstrating a growth mindset and the ability to receive feedback, adapt to different learners’ needs, and become a valued colleague in a strong and cohesive English department.

Education and experience requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field required; MA or MEd degree highly desirable.
  • Experience teaching English preferred.
  • Experience coaching preferred.
